It isn’t surprising that Black Myth: Wukong is insanely popular, and it has already broken multiple Steam records like the most amount of concurrent players for a singleplayer game, leaving the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring in the dust, as well as bringing an exabyte of traffic from China and pulling 70 Tbps of bandwidth even before launching.

That said, it doesn’t end there, as English isn’t the most popular language on Steam anymore. We took a glance at the Steam Hardware and Software survey for August 2024, which shows that 35.03% of the users on Steam are using Simplified Chinese, which is an uplift of 3.05%. English is still coming in strong at second place with a 31.17% usage, though.

The top comment on this Reddit post dubs this “The Wukong Effect,” which perfectly fits the situation. However, according to Steam Charts at the time of writing, Counter-Strike 2 has taken back its crown of the most played game, which isn’t surprising in the least, but Black Myth: Wukong is still just being at number two. Plus, we snapped it as the top-selling game (below), but will likely be overtaken by the new Warhammer 40K game as it closes in on launch.
