GPD has officially launched the Pocket 4, a powerful handheld device that is now available for pre-order on Indiegogo. It’s the successor to the GPD Pocket 3, offering significant improvements in performance and functionality. This is one of the first handheld devices powered by AMD’s Strix Point APUs, making it a unique addition to the market.

What does the GPD Pocket 4 offer?

The GPD Pocket 4 comes in three different variants, each boasting a different APU. All three variants can be pre-ordered now, and they’re currently scheduled to be shipped in January 2025. However, the GPD store lists the item for pre-order with an expected release date of February 14th.

  • Ryzen AI 9 HX 370: Features Radeon 890M (16 CUs) with RDNA 3.5 architecture.
  • Ryzen AI 9 365: Comes with Radeon 880M (12 CUs) with RDNA 3.5.
  • Ryzen 7 8840U (Hawk Point): Last-gen APU with Radeon 780M, suitable for gaming at lower settings.

The top-end Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 configuration can handle most games smoothly at 1080p resolution. For even better gaming performance, the device supports external GPUs (eGPU) via its USB4 port (e.g., OneXGPU). However, it lacks an OCuLink port, which would provide better bandwidth for eGPU setups.

All three variants come with the same 45 Wh battery and support 100W PD fast charging. On top of that, the two Zen 5 options feature a 2TB SSD, while the Hawk Point model comes with 1TB of storage. When it comes to RAM, all three are different. The one with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 has 64GB of RAM, while the Pocket 4 boasting the Ryzen AI 9 365 has 32GB. As for the third one, it comes with 16GB of RAM. The three also have an 8.8-inch LTPS screen with a 2.5K resolution and 144 Hz refresh rate. There’s also a modular expansion slot, and the company is currently offering four modules, which are also listed on Indiegogo.

As for the prices, here’s what’s mentioned on Indiegogo:

  • 370 + 64GB + 2TB – $1,335
  • 365 + 32GB + 2TB – $1,057
  • 8840U + 16GB + 1TB – $829

All three models are listed at prices lower than retail. On top of that, Indiegogo will be providing free shipping for all pre-orders. So, if you’re planning to get one, now would be the right time. There are plenty of great laptops on the market whether you’re looking for a budget gaming laptop or a 2-in-1 laptop, but the Pocket 4 is a unique piece of hardware in comparison.
