The Nintendo Switch 2 is not even out yet, but pre-orders are live, and some manufacturers are already offering third-party accessories for the console. One of these is Hori, who has announced a brand new camera accessory that will work when the console is in portable mode.
One of the major new features being introduced with the Switch 2 is GameChat. This feature works much like the popular app Discord and allows users to chat with friends, share their screen, or even use a webcam for video calls. Obviously, Nintendo has its official webcam, but Hori is offering alternatives.
There’s now a Switch 2 camera for handheld mode
Hori had previously announced a camera shaped like the iconic Piranha Plant. While this camera looked amazing, its resolution was limited to only 480p. The new Hori camera likewise only has a 480p resolution, which is definitely a downside, but does have one advantage compared to the official camera – it can be used in portable mode (otherwise known as handheld mode).
Both the official Nintendo camera and the Piranha Plant camera are designed to be used when the console is in docked mode. In contrast, the new Hori camera has a detachable base that allows the camera to be used in handheld mode.
Many users prefer to use the original Switch in portable mode, so it is easy to imagine that this will be the case for the Switch 2 as well. One of the advantages of the Switch and its successor is their versatility, allowing them to be used on the go or when the main TV is in use. A camera that has a similar level of adaptability will be tempting to many.
The official Nintendo camera does have the advantage of being in 1080p, but considering the apparent framerate problems seen during the video demonstration, 480p might be good enough for some. The Hori camera is available for pre-order on Amazon Japan for 3,981 Yen, and will be released on the same date as the Switch 2, June 5, 2025.
