Mods ensure Baldur’s Gate 3 will “continue to do well” says Larian CEO, following its final major patch
It has been a week since the release of patch 8 for Baldur’s Gate 3. The game’s developer, Larian Studios, notes that it is the last major patch for the game, and while it’s the end of an era, it’s an exciting time for modders. Major patches like this tend to break mods, requiring many modders to laboriously update them, but now they have an open road ahead.
You can already keep track of which mods aren’t broken in patch 8 now that compatibility is being addressed. Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, says he is “feeling good” about where BG3 is right now, pointing out that the new patch has brought back many players, and we assume some new ones as well.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke says BG3 will “continue to do well” despite the company moving on
Larian is moving on to its “next big thing,” says Vincke. While we don’t know what the company’s next game will be, we can be certain that fans will highly anticipate what comes next, with the CEO noting that Larian has “big shoes to fill”. Prior reports suggest we could be waiting until 2028 or 2029 before a new game launches.
With official support now gone (in any substantial kind of way), the onus is now on modders to carry the game with brand-new content. We’ve already seen some major custom campaigns in development, such as Path to Menzoberranzan and The Grand Theater. And while these mods continue to be developed, BG3’s player count has shot up.
Looking at the data on SteamDB, Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen a resurgence in players since (and just before) patch 8 launched on April 15th. For reference, the ‘F’ on the chart marks the Final Update for the game. While the player count is still a fraction of the massive 875K peak, it shows a renewed interest in the title, and Larian doesn’t expect it to die down any time soon.
