With the next generation of graphics cards looming, we look to be getting a few rumors here and there on what we might expect. As a known information source, Harukaze5719 posted an image on X of the notorious Board Channels forum. There seems to be some insider information on the happenings of Nvidia’s best graphics cards at the moment and expectations from the next-gen as well.
The user in question starts off by stating that the RTX 50 series release will likely be two GPUs again, mirroring the Ada launch over two years ago, when the 4090 and 4080 initially came out. Essentially, this means Nvidia is likely stick to its flagship heading up the release – if the rumors are true.
More importantly, it seems that Nvidia is shutting production on more of its 40 series cards. As we already saw 4090 stock was disappearing already, and that seems to be coming to the fate of the 4080 too. With the 90 GPU having already stopped production and stopping shipments in October. The 4080 Super is rumored to stop the next month and stop shipments in November, surprisingly just 10 months after its release at the beginning of the year.
Why is Nvidia seemingly stopping production?
Seeing as some of the GPUs are more recent additions it’s quite surprising to see them going in that direction. Even then usually you can still buy older hardware after the newer versions have come out, hopefully enjoying some savings. So it is rather soon to cut off the top end of the 40 series considering the potential for more sales if the prices were to drop.

However, it might just be saving on production capacity and likely making people go for the newer series instead. As with the TSMC capacity at full, then is no surprise that Nvidia will not want to bother with older stuff and go for the new exciting stuff instead. With the much higher enthusiast segment clearly the moneymaker and the best place for Nvidia to make some money. Considering the fact the 40 series cards cost $999 and $1,599 although the cheaper Super only knocked it down via its release.
So it wouldn’t be surprising to find the 50 equivalents coming in above that already. As the RTX 5090 and 5080 specs leaked, there seems to be quite an upgrade to their abilities, which makes them an easy combination for a price increase. Clearly, even with the higher prices and lesser value of these cards, people still buy these GPUs as Steam Hardware surveys show the rising popularity of the 40 series, and gamers still going for them. In which case I believe the 50 series will still be selling either way.
