The shadow drop of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster promptly shot to the top of the Steam popularity charts. As you may expect, it’s the number one top seller in the US on Steam right now. Despite this, it has not quite made it to the top of the charts among Steam Deck players, but it’s close enough.

The release of the Oblivion Remaster may have come as a surprise to you, despite persistent rumors that the remaster was being worked on. And with its launch, it has already secured a second-place spot on the Steam Deck charts, just behind a long-time favorite, Baldur’s Gate 3. Both games are Steam Deck Verified.

Baldur’s Gate 3 holds on to the top spot

There could be several reasons for this. Some of it undoubtedly has to do with the performance issues that Oblivion Remaster has on Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is a remarkably powerful device for being so small, but it still struggles to stand up to a full gaming desktop PC. Steam Deck users have to downgrade a lot of settings to keep the game stable, and even then, you won't be seeing much above 30 FPS.

Baldur's Gate 3, however, is a great advert for the Steam Deck, and since launch has been extremely popular amongst Steam Deck owners. The massive amount of mods and the regular patch cycle have also contributed to its popularity. The recent patch 8 update saw a spike in players, with Larian Studios’ CEO confident the game will “continue to do well” despite the company shifting its focus elsewhere.

With both Baldur's Gate 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster costing roughly the same on Steam, Steam Deck users who want a new RPG to play may have a choice to make. Though the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster is still popular, at the moment it works best on desktop machines, at least until a mod or patch manages to fix the performance problems on Steam Deck.
