Thanks to a rough number of how many units it has sold, the German retailer Mindfactory provides us with some interesting insights into graphics cards sales. We’ve seen 16GB models outselling 8GB cards, and that continues to be the case in the following weeks.

Now we see the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB models outselling the 8GB counterparts by 15 times, and the RX 9060 XT’s larger VRAM cards by over 29 times, based on all the models currently available at the retailer.

This is only one retailer in one country, but it could be a good indicator of gamers choosing to future-proof their PC builds for incoming games. Even if manufacturers suggest there is a market for 8GB GPUs, they’re slowly being dropped in support, or just frankly, not good enough for modern gaming.

We saw Indiana Jones and The Great Circle struggle to run on 8GB cards on release, which shows the trend of games moving to much more demanding system requirements. The same goes for DOOM: The Dark Ages, and we expect some upcoming AAA games will be similarly demanding. We’ve already seen the likes of Intel combat the VRAM issue in its latest Battlemage cards, but we hope to see Nvidia and AMD follow suit next generation. Rumors suggest that Nvidia’s upcoming Super GPUs will tackle the issue at the very least.

Sales stats from Mindfactory

With 41 RTX 5060 Ti and 20 RX 9060 XT models, Mindfactory has a solid selection of graphics cards to choose from. But only 16 of the Nvidia GPUs have 16GB of memory, while for AMD, that number is 13 – over half of them. The sales numbers aren’t precise either. Given that they say “over” a particular number, we expect these are somewhere in between the tens instead. But even taking the number at face value reveals the stark difference between 8GB and 16GB sales.

For both of them, the highest-selling cards are the cheapest models, but the 16GB models still win out over their cheapest models. For example, the cheapest 5060 Ti 8GB is €70 cheaper than the cheapest 16GB model. As for AMD, their cheapest 16GB is €58 more than the cheapest 8GB.

It shows that gamers are voting with their wallets and choosing 16GB models. Even if there are still a few 8GB cards getting sales, it’s nowhere near as prominent as the higher VRAM options.
