The Ryzen 9 9800X3D launched a few weeks ago, and it was sold out within minutes on popular retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg. Many AMD fans had hoped the launch would drive down the prices of previous CPUs, especially the 7800X3D, but that didn’t happen – at least until now.

While that might sound great for budding gamers looking to get last-gen hardware at a seriously reduced price, that, sadly, isn’t the case here. In fact, the lackluster $20 discount from its original $478 price point is pretty unimpressive – especially when you factor in the possibility of getting the 9800X3D for $20 more.

We spoke with AMD recently who said that the main target audience for the new 9800X3D CPU was older 5000 series users, however, thanks to the “overclocking factor” of the new X3D chip, 7800X3D users could be interested – making the recently reduced price even less eye-catching.

Overall, the 7800X3D is finally starting to drop in price on various retailers – but is doing so at a rate that could make buyers look elsewhere.

7800X3D’s price drops down to $458

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is one of the best CPUs for gaming currently available in the market, which is why it got 4.5 out of 5 marks in our in-depth review. Even though it was released back in April 2023, the demand for it is still so high that it went out of stock on popular retailers a few weeks ago. Newegg was the only retailer selling it, but the CPU was available for over $600 there, which is way over what it’s usually listed at. Even though the CPU got back in stock, it was listed for $479 across all popular retailers. For reference, price history data from Camelcamelcamel shows the CPU was typically priced between $350 and $400 for most of the time before October this year.

Because of this, many AMD fans were waiting for the 9800X3D to launch, hoping it would finally lead to a price drop for the 7800X3D. While this didn’t happen immediately after the launch, its price has now started to decrease. Right now, it’s available for $458.98 on Amazon, which is around $20 less than what it was listed for before. Yes, we know that this isn’t a ‘significant’ price drop, but it shows that the 9800X3D is finally causing the price of its predecessor to drop.

At the moment, the 9800X3D is also difficult to grab. While it did return to stock in bulk at popular retailers, it seems to be out of stock again. Once the stock issues for the latest X3D CPU are resolved, we can expect the price of the 7800X3D to drop further. In fact, we’re expecting it to drop down to around $400 within the next six months.
