For months now, there has been speculation about Nvidia’s next generation of graphic cards, the RTX 5000 series. While Nvidia has not given us any official idea about specs so far, it looks like the company is gearing up for the launch at full speed.
As per some recent reports, Nvidia is planning to discontinue the production of the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D, which means we can start looking forward to the Blackwell GPUs. Take it with a pinch of salt though, as it seems to be highly speculative at this point.
Nvidia may be planning for RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D discontinuation
According to the latest reports from Chinese Board Channels (via Gazlog), Nvidia is preparing to discontinue production of GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D GPUs, starting in October. The report says that there are no concrete plans for discontinuation as of yet, but Nvidia will go through with it next month.
Further, the report suggested that after the discontinuation, the inventory would be ‘digested’ until November. The shortage will then be resolved with the release of the RTX 5090D. Considering that the RTX 4090 remains a popular choice despite the high price, there might be shortages – and we feel inclined to believe that many people will be waiting for next-gen before they buy, hoping for that flagship price to drop.
In China, only the RTX 4090D is available. “If there is demand, it is recommended to prepare early to avoid a shortage of stock after November, which may lead to a possible increase in market prices,” the report reads (translated).
At the moment, there is no official confirmation from Nvidia. However, AMD did something similar last month. The manufacturer discontinued some of its RDNA 2 GPUs, which include RX 6600, RX 6600 XT, and RX 6650 XT graphic cards, to focus on the production of the RX 8000 series.
Further, last month, Nvidia reportedly discontinued the RTX 3060 GPU, which is the most popular graphics card on the planet based on Steam’s Hardware Survey, though it is slowly dropping in usage as consumers move on to newer generations.
It’s not confirmed yet
VideoCardz is one publication to come out and deem this rumor “pure speculation” – adding that it “makes no sense”. We were also surprised about the rumor, especially considering the fact Nvidia is still discontinuing 30 series cards, so cutting production of the current-gen 40 series GPUs does seem unlikely. So, as always, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation before this is fact.
In any case, it is possible that we will see the new Blackwell GPUs hit the market by the end of the year. As we reported earlier, the production of RTX 5000 GPUs seems to be on track despite some delays.
