In case you missed it, God of War Ragnarok launched on PC yesterday, after less than two years of PlayStation exclusivity. PC gamers have been flocking to the new version of the game; we imagine those who have been patiently waiting for a PC port were first in line. The game’s system requirements aren’t too bad for a AAA title, and the game runs pretty well on a range of hardware – something Nvidia was keen to show off in its benchmarks.
However, one system requirement that may have flown under the radar would be the 6GB VRAM GPU requirement (or 5888MB to be exact according to this Reddit post). That rules out older low-end cards such as the GTX 1650 or even AMD’s 6500 XT which feature just 4GB of VRAM. If your system is fitted with one of these though, you’re in luck, as a fan-made mod will bypass the requirement.
VRAM requirement bypass for God of War Ragnarok
We spotted the ‘VRAM requirement bypass’ mod on Nexus Mods not long after the Ragnarok released and it’s the best way of trying out the game for yourself if you happen to have one of these low-end GPUs. According to its creator, the mod bypasses the 6GB VRAM requirement by “spoofing to another GPU with enough VRAM”.
As a disclaimer, you shouldn’t expect the game to run extremely well on such low-end hardware, but it’s worth a try if that’s what you’re limited to. The mod’s creator recommends at least 16GB of RAM, as the lack of VRAM will have to be made up by your system memory instead. For reference, GOW Ragnarok suggests the following graphics cards:
Brand | Minimum | Recommended |
---|---|---|
Nvidia | GTX 1060 (6GB) | RTX 2060 Super (8GB) |
AMD | RX 5500 (8GB) | RX 5700 (8GB) |
Intel | Arc A750 (8GB) | Arc A770 (16GB) |
