33-year-old Japanese author Rie Kudan has admitted to the use of AI in her award-winning novel ‘Tokyo-to-Dojo-to’ (Sympathy Tower Tokyo). Prior to this revelation, Rie Kudan’s award-winning novel had been lauded by a judge for being “almost flawless” and “universally enjoyable”. This means that generative AI tools — like ChatGPT — are now at the stage where they can help humans create a convincingly human-like novel. For context, the novel in question is about a high-rise prison tower and its architects of tolerance of criminals with AI as a recurring theme in the story itself.
According to Kudan, only a small portion of her novel was written entirely by ChatGPT AI bot. Furthermore, she added that the AI bot helps her to unlock more potential as a writer.
“I made active use of generative AI like chatGPT in writing this book,” Kudan said in an interview. “Sometimes chatGPT responses inspired dialogue in the novel.”
