AI, particularly natural language processing (NLP), has seen tremendous advancements this decade. Generative AI is your creative partner, producing entire novels from a short text prompt. Laureate author Rie Kudan recently admitted that she had used ChatGPT to complete her award-winning sci-fi novel ‘Tokyo-to-Dojo-to’ (Sympathy Tower Tokyo). Could AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT author the ‘Harry Potters’ of the future?

Can ChatGPT author a novel?

33-year-old Japanese author Rie Kudan has admitted to the use of AI in her award-winning novel ‘Tokyo-to-Dojo-to’ (Sympathy Tower Tokyo). Prior to this revelation, Rie Kudan’s award-winning novel had been lauded by a judge for being “almost flawless” and “universally enjoyable”. This means that generative AI tools — like ChatGPT — are now at the stage where they can help humans create a convincingly human-like novel. For context, the novel in question is about a high-rise prison tower and its architects of tolerance of criminals with AI as a recurring theme in the story itself.

According to Kudan, only a small portion of her novel was written entirely by ChatGPT AI bot. Furthermore, she added that the AI bot helps her to unlock more potential as a writer.

“I made active use of generative AI like chatGPT in writing this book,” Kudan said in an interview. “Sometimes chatGPT responses inspired dialogue in the novel.”

Can ChatGPT write an ‘almost flawless’ Harry Potter novel?

The answer is yes. ChatGPT is capable of writing a Harry Potter novel. However, there isn’t a guarantee the AI-written novel will be ‘almost flawless’. We believe an AI bot like ChatGPT still requires the human mind to make it a complete universally enjoyable book.

To unleash the maximum creativity of a writer, generative AI can be a great tool. Used sparingly, it can be a great source of inspiration, even if only used for a first draft. In her case, Rai used AI for only 5% of her book which means she put 95% effort into researching and studying to complete this novel.

It points out that the AI potential is limitless and with its help it is a great way to unleash the maximum creativity in the respective field. The ChatGPT launched in 2022 and its launch completely revolutionized the way of AI-generated content.
