OpenAI GPTs bring the highest level of control ever seen to consumer AI. Announced at OpenAI DevDay in San Francisco, on Monday 6th of November, 2023, GPTs are customizable AI agents, personalized with your own training data. Now, OpenAI has launched the GPT Store, where users can build and share their customized bots with specialized functionality. There’s never been a better time to make a custom GPT!
What are OpenAI GPTs?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has several models to choose from, each more powerful than the last. Each new model is trained on a larger, higher-quality, more comprehensive, and more recent dataset — at least, that’s the ideal. However, the firm can only train its AI so much in-house.
One of the biases inherent in an AI system is that the creators of that AI have to choose what to train their neural networks on. This won’t be everything in the world (and that’s not just because more training costs more money). AI is trained on data that the engineers have access to, information that the in-house staff knows about, but you don’t know what you don’t know (and the same goes for OpenAI engineers).
In short, ChatGPT is not an omniscient compendium of all human knowledge. You may have a very specific use case, a specific subject, or require a deep level of technical context that the flagship AI model cannot help with.
That’s where OpenAI GPTs come in.
How to make custom GPTs without code
You can build your own custom GPT without knowing how to code. Doing so is a familiar process to anyone who’s interacted with ChatGPT already. Simply click “Explore GPTs”, located on the left center of the screen for desktop web browser users. Then, navigate to “+ Create” in the top right. From here, you can chat to the GPT Builder in natural human language. Simply describe what you want to achieve, and how you want to do it, and it will set everything up for you!
A GPT is a Generative Pre-trained Transformer. While OpenAI didn’t invent the technology, it appears that they’re about to be casually associated with it forever more. There’s a great deal of value in commanding a word in the same way that people refer to the brand ‘hoover’ instead of ‘vacuum cleaner, or ‘google it’ instead of ‘search it online’.
Your own custom versions of ChatGPT will have the same capabilities as the OpenAI flagship models GPT-4V or GPT-4 Turbo, but with your own extra knowledge, custom preferences, and instructions. This will allow for greater control than the ‘Custom Instructions’ update from July of 2023. GPT-4 Turbo, also announced on OpenAI DevDay 2023, has knowledge or real-time day and current events up until April 2023. Coming only days after Elon Musk announced Grok, which outperforms GPT-3.5 but not GPT-4, the xAI chatbot has already fallen further behind. You can make your own AI chatbot more powerful than Musks!
How to get custom OpenAI GPTs
The new feature will be exclusively available to paid subscribers with a ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Team, or ChatGPT Enterprise plan. Availability starts this week, with the GPT Store coming later this month.

The new GPT Store
Custom GPTs have a permanent home, with the introduction of the GPT Store. This new marketplace features creations by verified builders, which will be searchable and “may climb the leaderboards”. The best of the best will be featured at the top, and all will be organized into categories like productivity, education, and “just for fun”. You’ll even be able to earn money from your custom GPTs!
The GPT Store is set to create its own micro-economy, further cementing OpenAI as the de-facto AI chatbot company. Historically, when companies create a platform that enables users to independently make money (e.g. YouTube), users flock to it and stay there, becoming evangelists for life.
