What We Think

The 9800X3D has unlocked its potential and become the leading processor in the market. The 2nd generation V-Cache gives it the ability to run the CPU core faster and at higher voltages, pushing its performance even further over the 7800X3D and on par with non-X3D chips in non-gaming tasks. The chip’s redesign has now made rendering and productivity tasks much more of a possibility on the X3D, with scores soaring above its predecessor and in line with the rest of AMD’s line-up, improving on one of its previous cruxes.

Reasons to Buy
  • Incredible gaming performance
  • Now capable of being overclocked
  • Great power efficiency
Reasons to Avoid
  • Still falls behind in some multi-core tasks
  • Priced nearly as much as Ryzen 9 CPU

  • Platform: Intel Socket 1700
What We Think

Raptor Lake ‘Refresh’ is right. There’s nothing too exciting here in comparison to 13th-gen performance. Yes, expect better thermal efficiency and slightly better performance across the board. And yes, it’s another impressive CPU from Intel. It’s not enough to convince us that it’s an essential arrival, but there may be greater differences further down the 14th gen range. The Core i9 14900K is very strong, of course, but then so is the 13900K…and it may well be even cheaper now.

Reasons to Buy
  • Leads on performance
  • Improved power efficiency on 13900KS
  • Will make 13th gen processors cheaper
Reasons to Avoid
  • Not a huge leap in performance
  • Only beneficial for the minority
  • Not upgrade-worthy

  • Platform: LGA 1851 (Arrow Lake)
What We Think

The Core Ultra 9 285K is a great processor; there’s no doubt about it. Even as it cut back on the thread count and hyper-threading, I was worried about its multi-core processing power, but that seems not to be the case, as it leads in benchmarks for multi-core performance. In fact, it’s the single-core performance that sort of disappoints, as it achieves on-par or below-performance compared to its direct competition.

Its switch to TSMC’s much smaller process has led to improved temperatures as compared to its predecessors; that’s even though it still boasts the same high TDP without reaching boiling temperatures and throttling its performance. That should give it some longevity and life without cooking itself, and it also comes from the fact it’s a new socket and generation, which should hopefully give you something down the line if needed.

Reasons to Buy
  • Great temperatures even under full loads
  • Impressive multi-core performance
  • Plenty of cores and threads with a good split into performance and efficiency
Reasons to Avoid
  • Not the best gaming performance
  • No longer supports DDR4 like its predecessors
  • Falls behind the 14900K in plenty of scenarios

  • Base speed: 4.2 GHz
  • L3 Cache: 96 MB
  • TDP: 120 W
  • Platform: AMD (AM5)
What We Think

The 7800X3D is a fantastic chip and much improved over the previous generation. This CPU will smash through any gaming workload you throw at it and be able to handle productivity tasks much better than before, although it still is a little limited in that department.

Reasons to Buy
  • Fantastic gaming performance
  • Affordable thanks to age
  • Less limited than the previous generation
Reasons to Avoid
  • Still limited by cache outside of gaming workloads
  • No included cooler
  • Upgrade to AM5 can be expensive if you don’t already have the parts.

7700X

  • Two AMD Ryzen 7 7700X processors in front of their packaging, clear and focused against a blurred background, ready for review.
Highly Recommended
Specifications
  • Cores: 8
  • Threads: 16
  • Boost clock speed: 5.4 GHz
  • Base clock speed: 4.5 GHz
  • L3 Cache: 32 MB
  • TDP: 105W
  • Platform: AMD Socket AM5
What We Think

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X is a CPU that sometimes struggles to find its place in the world; however, it still offers a lot in terms of power and performance. It could be a little more affordable, but it does okay at filling the massive performance gap between the 7600X and the 7900X.

Reasons to Buy
  • Full of that good old AMD power efficiency
  • Can be found cheap during big sales events
  • Essentially the new 7800X
Reasons to Avoid
  • An uncommon choice next to the likes of the 7800X3D, only viable if you don’t want to game primarily
  • No boxed cooler

  • Platform: AMD Socket AM5
What We Think

The 9600X does better intergenerationally than its bigger brother, the 9700X. On release it was more set on efficiency than performance. But with the later PPT update, it can push for higher performance at a higher power draw, so you can choose what level to play it at.

Reasons to Buy
  • Good efficiency
  • Fairly inexpensive
  • Has the option for higher PPT mode
Reasons to Avoid
  • Not massive gains over previous gen, changed with PPT update
  • Not much going for it

What We Think

The 9950X is certainly a capable CPU with a lot to offer those looking for strong multi-threaded performance. PPBO can ramp this CPU up a few notches, but you’d better be ready to cool it. It eats 240mm AIOs for breakfast when PBO is enabled

Reasons to Buy
  • Strong multi-core performance
  • Can be boosted a lot with PBO
  • 16 cores can tackle heavy workloads
Reasons to Avoid
  • Expensive – wait for a price reduction
  • Will likely be outperformed by Intel’s Arrow Lake flagship
  • Still suffers from AMD’s efficiency obsession

Is Prime Day a good time to get a CPU

Yes, there are seemingly a lot of strong deals across the various processors, with some even reaching their lowest prices on the site, according to price tracking sites. That means you could get a top-performing CPU for a lot cheaper, getting plenty of savings and putting them towards the rest of your hardware.

You can expect plenty of other deals too, so you can also consider the best GPU to go alongside the CPU. Or even then, a motherboard to fit the processor into. It could also be a time to get an SSD or RAM for cheaper, even marginally so.
