The launch of the Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti was not without its controversy. In common with pretty much every card Nvidia has launched this generation, it faced some kind of backlash. Most of these were focused on the 8GB model of the card. Newly released benchmarks show that reviewers and customers may be right to ignore the 8GB model.

Figures produced by German outlet ComputerBase detail thorough testing of the two variants across 27 games, including comparisons on PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0. The chart posted shows the performance rating of the RTX 5060 Ti, with the 16GB model directly compared against the 8GB model.

5060 Ti 8GB performance drops at 1440p, PCIe 4.0 makes a difference

The benchmark figures show results on 2560 x 1440 (1440p) resolution. When using PCIe 5.0, the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB has an average FPS of 65.2 FPS, while the 8GB version only manages 57.6 FPS. What is even worse is that users on older hardware that supports PCIe 4.0, the 8GB model can only manage an average of 50.4, compared with the 16GB model, which remains fairly stable at 65.0 FPS, even on this older hardware.

The situation somehow manages to be even worse if the Top percentile FPS is examined. This chart shows the 16GB model reporting 53.6 FPS on PCIe 5.0, remaining steady at 53.4 FPS on PCIe 4.0. However, the 8GB model sees a drop on PCIe 5.0 down to 44.3 FPS. Performance drops off a cliff on PCIe 4.0, dropping down to 37.9 FPS.

Stark performance drop are a good indication that consumers should avoid the 8GB model, especially on older motherboards, since the difference is quite significant. According to Computer Base’s testing, these results come from a ‘geometric mean’ of 27 different games, including titles such as Black Myth: Wukong, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Though this is only one report, it only adds to the growing consensus that the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB is a card that can't keep up with the demands of modern PC gaming, especially beyond 1080p with higher texture settings.
