It has been a couple of weeks since the release of the Silent Hill 2 remake, launched with plenty of praise for its modern take on the PS2-era title. While the game itself may be great, the performance wasn’t exactly something to shout about. Modders were quick to unlock features such as FSR 3 Frame Generation, as the game lacked native implementation.

Now, the developers have taken a step forward with native DLSS Frame Generation and AFMF support in the latest patch. We also see mention of “improved performance and optimization for Steam Deck,” which is much needed as it could run like a PowerPoint presentation at times on the Valve handheld. However, players don’t report too much difference.

Silent Hill 2 patch 1.04 helps performance on PC

While there haven’t been any real sweeping performance upgrades for PC players, the introduction of DLSS frame generation and AMD Fluid Motion Frames is a big help. A single-player game like this isn’t competitive, so we’re all for using AI frame-gen tech to boost framerates and deliver a smoother experience; we recently found some great AFMF 2 benchmarks that demonstrate this.

Interestingly enough, the update 1.04 patch notes don’t make any mention of native FSR 3.1 frame generation, only the upscaling (supersampling) side of the feature. Unfortunately for Steam Deck players, AFMF 2 is a driver-level tool that works via AMD’s Adrenalin software built for Windows – not Linux.

Other improvements include “fixed stuttering issues” and “reduced visual glitches” when using Nvidia DLSS.

Steam Deck users should enjoy better performance, but only slightly

There’s a single patch note that should be of interest to Deck users that reads as follows: “Improved performance and optimization for Steam Deck.” The game is still listed as unsupported in terms of compatibility, so any kind of performance improvement is much appreciated. However, players are reporting online that the new patch doesn’t seem to improve much. A video showcasing Steam Deck gameplay on the 1.04 version notes that “performance has improved slightly” and stuttering should be less of a problem.

Either way, if you want to enjoy Silent Hill 2 on the Deck, we’d recommend using FSR. To ensure this option is available, use the SteamDeck=0 %command% launch option in the game’s properties.
