Steam’s new most popular GPU can only be found in a laptop

Every month, Valve updates its hardware & software survey, giving us a close look at what the average Steam user has in their system. When it comes to graphics cards, Nvidia’s xx60 series GPUs have long been the most popular, with the RTX 3060 retaining its throne in recent times. However, there’s a new GPU on top, and it’s not one you’ll find in a gaming PC.
Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is now at the top of the leaderboard, jumping in front of both the RTX 3060 and RTX 4060. Speaking of this tier of cards, keep in mind that the RTX 5060 is coming out this month. Team Green has yet to announce a specific release date, but we expect to hear more about it at Computex 2025, which kicks off on May 19th.

It takes time for new generations of cards to take over Steam’s hardware leaderboards, but the 40 series is now well established on the market. For reference, the most popular GPU from the latest 50 series right now is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080, with just 0.38% of Steam users. It shares this statistic with the RTX 5070, which we expect to take over soon enough.
You may also notice the lack of representation from AMD’s Radeon graphics cards. Nvidia has always enjoyed the majority share. For example, despite all the praise and apparent popularity of the new RX 9070 XT, neither of Team Red’s new RX 9000 series cards make the list. However, it’s hard to know yet whether this is a reporting issue, as some AMD GPUs are chalked under the generic ‘AMD Radeon Graphcs’ identifier, as you can see in the table up above.
Overall, the latest stats go to show that gaming laptops are a popular alternative for PC gamers – note that the RTX 3060 Laptop GPU also makes the top 10. Keep in mind that laptop GPUs feature cut-down specs in order to fit the form factor, so performance is weaker than their desktop equivalents. Regardless, if you’re looking for a RTX 4060 laptop, we recommend checking out our review of the Acer Predator Triton Neo 16 to learn more about the kind of performance you can expect from this tier.
