HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw review: a feature-packed and fast all-in-one color laser printer
Table of Contents
If you’re looking for a printer from a well-renowned brand, then HP is a name that comes up more often than not. They produce a range of color laser printers that are designed for office work and home usage, with high-capacity cartridges and efficiency at their core.
One of these workhorses is the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw – a name as hefty as the printer itself. Despite its size and weight, it delivers fast, high-quality prints and features an easy-to-follow setup process. While it may have some limitations for larger office environments, it remains a reliable color laser printer for most tasks, as demonstrated in our full review and testing below.
- Printer Output: Color
- Printer Type: Laser
- Connectivity Technology: Ethernet, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile printing, RJ-11
- Duplex Printing: Yes, automatic
Compact and standing tall, the dense HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw comes with a lot of features and plenty of connectivity options. It’s a flexible choice for running long queue jobs quickly and to a high quality. It does still come with toner cartridges, though, so it’s not an economical solution for the long run, but for running many documents and even images, it is a good option.
- Fast and high-quality prints
- Surprisingly compact for its features
- Lots of connectivity options
- Relatively high running costs
- Lacks expandability
Box contents and setup
As a full-feature laser printer, the MFP 3302fdw arrives in a large, robust package. Weighing a total of 20.6 kg (45.4 lbs), with the printer itself at 17.1 kg (37.7 lbs), it’s no surprise that unpacking is recommended with two people. Once opened, here’s what you’ll find inside.

- Power cord
- Toner cartridge (1 of black, cyan, magenta, yellow)
- User Guide
- Flyers
Despite its size, the packaging is thorough without being cumbersome. To remove the printer, lay the box on its side, then lift out the unit secured between two thick, sturdy foam pieces that protect its edges. Once the foam is removed and the printer is taken out of the plastic bag, the remaining trays and openings are taped up for added protection.
The brightly colored tape is easy to spot and remove, with folded ends that make gripping simple. Once removed, you can plug in and power on the printer, using the touchscreen to select your language and region. It offers flexible connectivity, allowing you to connect via Ethernet, WiFi, or USB.

The setup continues on your connected device, where you can download drivers with either basic or advanced options, giving you control over which features are installed. This includes scan and fax capabilities, which expand the printer’s functionality but aren’t required if unnecessary.
No HP account is needed to start using the printer, so it’s ready quickly with minimal hassle. After connecting to the network, the printer may automatically update its firmware – enhancing security, though occasionally at inconvenient times.
Design
The MFP 3302fdw has a fairly boxy design, but subtle angles and contrasting colors give it some visual interest. The base, including the paper tray and feet, is black, while the main body is white. This is complemented by a black paper output tray, a white scanner lid, and a striking blue automatic document feeder (ADF) on top, adding a touch of color to the overall design.
On the front, the printer displays the HP logo centered on the white body, alongside a large informational sticker on the right-hand side that can be peeled off. The paper tray sits at the bottom, sliding out smoothly and featuring prominent, easy-to-adjust guides that accommodate a variety of media sizes.
Just above the main tray is a secondary media input designed for single sheets, ideal for envelopes or letterhead, which takes printing priority. This front panel can be opened to access both the single-sheet input and the cartridge tray. The cartridge tray holds four large toner rolls, which are easy to remove and replace when needed.
The sides of the printer are understated, featuring only recessed handles for opening the front panels. At the back, the printer has a top hatch handle, grey informational stickers at the bottom, and vents along the edges. Connection ports are located on the right side, with the power input at the bottom left. The rear hatch provides access to internal mechanisms and paper rollers, making it straightforward to clear jams or other obstructions.
On top, the paper output tray extends to accommodate larger media. To the left is a USB port for direct printing, and above it sits the touchscreen, sized well for full usability and angled for comfortable operation while standing. Slightly behind the touchscreen is the scanner bed, topped with an automatic document feeder (ADF) that supports duplex scanning. The ADF can also be opened to access and clear rollers if necessary.
Print results and speed
After unpacking and setting up, I put it through our printer tests. Checking both the quality and the speed of the printer across various tasks, which included long queues, double-sided, copying, in both color and grayscale. Here’s how it fared in our testing lab.
Firstly, I queued up six pages in a row, a mix of three colored and three black and white pages. To complete the whole set, it took 25 seconds in total. The first page took up most of that time at just under 13 seconds, and the subsequent pages were mostly just above 2 seconds each.
Following that, a 10-page double-sided print of a script gives us a look at the long job queue and printing ability. That took just under 46 seconds, with the first double-sided page taking under 14 seconds and then 8 seconds per successive page.
That is a relatively fast-running printer, capable of getting through the job queue rather effectively. Even with the double-sided pages taking a bit longer, it’s an effective speed option.
In comparison, the HP LaserJet MFP M234dw, the monochrome laser, took under 30 seconds for the six-page and 47 seconds for the 10-page, making it a good pick for those long document queues in the office.
Even with its lower resolution, the quality of the prints from the printer is quite good. Keeping the color gradients to a high quality, the lines don’t spill over, and the text keeps its legibility down to the lowest sizes. That’s all straight out of the box, as well, without necessary alignment. Even with images, it manages to keep the clarity and details of them on the page.
Even copying pages preserves the majority of the quality of the sheet. Some of the intensity from the color drops out, but most of the color quality is transferred over onto the new print. Showing it as a decent option for an all-in-one printer with the range of features you get with it.

The specs of the printer show it to be a solid printer with a range of connection options, a wide range of supported media and sizes, and a lot of features.
All of that comes in at a price of $579/£479.99, a more expensive option for the color and AIO build of this laser printer. It is certainly more of an investment, and one should stand the test of time.
A replacement high-yield black costs $114.99/£99.49 for around 3,200 pages, and each high-yield color costs $133.99/£114.49 for around 2,500. The lower-yielding cartridges instead cost $78.99/£67.99 1,300 for the black, with a supposed 1,300 sheets it can print, and colors cost $92.99/£79.99 for 1,200 pages.
That comes out at a print economy of $0.035/£0.031 for the high yield black and $0.161/0.137 for the high yield color. Certainly not on the level of ink tank printers, but for cartridge-based printers, it’s surprisingly not too expensive to run, except for buying the full range of cartridges in the first place.
Conclusion
- Printer Output: Color
- Printer Type: Laser
- Connectivity Technology: Ethernet, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile printing, RJ-11
- Duplex Printing: Yes, automatic
Overall, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw is a surprisingly compact yet dense all-in-one laser printer. Providing fast printing, copying, scanning, and even faxing ability at a high quality. That’s if you can afford the higher ink economy of the cartridges and being locked into the HP ecosystem and security. But for speed and features, the HP printer is rather impressive.
