Founders Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno announced the tech wearable in June of this year. The ex-Apple executives capitalise on the advent of generative AI with a mini-projector the size of a pin on your chest pocket. Partnering with Qualcomm ventures, the laser-projected display puts an assortment of on-device AI capabilities in the palm of your hand — literally. As we approach the unveiling on November 9th, let’s take a look at the Humane AI pin, and what it’s capable of.

What is the Humane AI pin?

Touted as the new era of personal mobile computing, the Humane AI pin is a new type of standalone device — wearable artificial intelligence. Designed to replace your smartphone, the software platform harnesses the power of AI to enable all the usual functionality you’d wield in the palm of you hand, but now on your shirt pocket instead.

This clothing-based wearable device uses built-in biometrics, not dissimilar to a smart watch, which Imran Chaudhri references in his TED Talk, “The disappearing computer — and a world where you can take AI everywhere”. The capabilities of the pin are partly reliant on the placement and form factor, in the same way that a smart watch can do some things that a mobile phone can’t.

Where a watch swings to-and-fro on your wrist, and a smartphone is hidden inside a pocket, a pin maintains a consistent, forward-facing view of your world at near eye-level. However, the device is not a body-cam (though this would be the ideal form factor for it). Instead, the it projects a user interface onto the users palm, to be controlled by hand gestures and finger movements.

Announcement from founders Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno

In a statement from Chaudhri and Bongiorno, the founders said they were “excited to reveal our first device… the Humane Ai Pin” ahead of launch. A launch that saw supermodel Naomi Campbell wearing the pin at Coperni’s Paris fashion show, becoming the first non-employee to wear the device in public. Humane’s vision here is to normalize the technology form factor, which ” presents an opportunity for people to take AI with them everywhere and to unlock a new era of personal mobile computing which is seamless, screenless and sensing.”

“We are also delighted to reveal we are working with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.” they add, referencing the semiconductor manufacturer responsible for their processing hardware. The smaller the device, the less powerful it tends to be (understandably so). However, the AI pin promises powerful performance, taking advantage of real-time contextual information unique to the form factor. The AI-powered intelligent clothing-based wearable uses the advanced snapdragon platform and a range of sensors (including a forward-facing camera) to process ambient compute interactions.

Humane AI partners with Qualcomm Technologies for smart wearable processing hardware

The hardware represents a collaboration with chip maker Qualcomm Technologies. This is the company responsible for the Snapdragon CPU (Central Processing Unit) line that most likely runs alongside an Adreno GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) inside your phone right now.

Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. shares the founders’ excitement.

“Humane’s AI pin will deliver a superior AI experience. With the advent of generative AI, Humane’s AI pin and user experience takes excellent advantage of some of the key strengths of on-device AI,” he says. The device represents a unique opportunity for “real-time contextual information to provide the user with exciting, personalized AI use cases.” The Qualcomm SVP adds that his firm shares “Humane’s vision of bringing AI with you everywhere and delivering on-device AI to everyone. We cannot wait to see where they take this device.”

Humane and Qualcomm Technologies have a shared vision for a future of technology which is powered by AI. Qualcomm Technologies’ experience in powering new products is unparalleled and we are proud to have them support our device.
