Ever since OpenAI’s chatbot hit the scene in November 2022, it has surged in popularity with seemingly endless use cases in both every day and working life. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app is at the top of its game, and the top of its industry, with the new GPT-4 Turbo AI model pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence once more. However, there may be some specialist use cases that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hasn’t thought of just yet. So when the foundational model won’t cut it, where else can we look? In this article, we’ll look at the best apps powered by the same system as ChatGPT.

Best ChatGPT apps

ChatGPT is the only ChatGPT app. Available on iOS and Android (as well as via web browser, which doesn’t count as an app version), ChatGPT is the AI chatbot built on top of the GPT-4 LLM. However, other apps can use GPT-4 via the API, giving them similar powers to ChatGPT. It might be useful to think of GPT-4 as the brain. Many different companies and software programs can use this neural network at the same time. ChatGPT is one such example. The latter is a software product, essentially a user interface for the AI model underneath. It just so happens to be created, owned, and operated by the same company – OpenAI.

Given that the OpenAI GPT-4 model is utilized in other third-party apps, it is useful to know which ones are the best and understand each of their unique features. Arguably some are better than others. Some, for example, will come bloated with ads. Some already have Android apps, and those that don’t can still be used on a mobile device via a web browser. Below is a list of apps that, ChatGPT, uses the GPT-4 model.

Best ChatGPT apps

ChatGPT – Official app by OpenAI

Of course, the first app on our list is going to be the official ChatGPT app. OpenAI introduced the iOS ChatGPT app on May 18th, 2023. Later, on July 27th, 2023, the Android app followed. The app means you can use the functionality of ChatGPT in a fully supported app, and enjoy easier access from your iPhone, without the need to travel to the OpenAI site in your browser. Using ChatGPT in an app form makes the process of utilizing the chatbot’s functions easier and more seamless.

ChatGPT is a generative AI tool that can produce and create human-like responses in a conversational manner. In addition to this with a ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise subscription users can access the the impressive upgrades found in the GPT-4 model. GPT-4 hosts a range of additional functions including file input, image generation, image analysis, and much more.

If you’re uncertain whether a ChatGPT subscription is for you, luckily, we’ve got you sorted. Our comprehensive review of the product, outlines all the features, benefits, and drawbacks of the platform, ensuring that you make an informed decision when deciding to download the app or not.

“Overall, ChatGPT is the best AI chatbot on the market. With a world-class AI model, clean UI, and a well-stocked ChatGPT Plugin Store full of useful software integrations, it’s the best AI tool for many different use cases. While no AI chatbot can guarantee error-free results, it does an impressive job at a price point that will likely suit your needs”

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot, formerly known as Bing Chat is a comprehensive multimodal AI chatbot. Copilot is built on the GPT-4 model and users can access it completely for free. This means that if you want to harness the power of the ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise features without paying the monthly fee, then you can do so through the Copilot app.

Additionally, Copilot received an upgrade to its system, in which OpenAI’s GPT-4 turbo model was implemented. All you have to do to access this is set Copilot to creative or precise mode. Copilot’s USP is that you’ll also find it directly built into the Microsoft 365 suite of office apps – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If you work with these programs and want AI capabilities, this is the only sensible option for you.

The two platforms differ slightly, but the main deciding factor between these apps is user preference. If up-to-date information on recent news and reviews is what you want, then Copilot is the way to go. However, for more general information, or insights into complex topics are what you want then ChatGPT may be the option for you. If you’d like to find out more about how the two platforms compare, then take a look at our ChatGPT vs Microsoft Copilot guide.

Genie

Next up on our list is the AI chatbot, Genie. This handy little chatbot is powered by ChatGPT, GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, and comes in the form of a mobile app or web browser platform. Genie’s main focus is being able to answer questions and help create content. In addition to this, it can understand the elements within a picture, much like ChatGPT, and can incorporate PDFs and web links into your discussions.

This app is available on iOS and Android, and offers a range of payment plans. There is a free option where users can use up to 10 credits per day, a weekly unlimited option for $6.99, a monthly unlimited option for $14.99, a yearly unlimited option for $69.99 – $99.99, and a Pro Access option for $4.99-$44.99. If you want to use the benefits of the GPT-4 model then you’ll have to subscribe to the Pro access option.

AI Chatbot

AI ChatBot is an AI-based chat app that works similarly to ChatGPT. You can converse with the AI assistant for free straight from your iPhone. The bot can answer any question and can help you compose essays, songs, poems, and more. The app is powered by ChatGPT and GPT-4, so is a great option for users wanting to find a ChatGPT alternative.

Like many of the other apps listed here, there is an option to upgrade to a premium subscription. With this upgrade, you’ll benefit from a lack of distracting ads, you can enjoy faster response times, and you’ll have access to unlimited questions and responses. The premium option can be activated by either choosing a one-off payment or you can choose a subscription that benefits you.

As you can see in the image above, the AI Chatbot has no issue generating images from a user prompt. This feature is found on the free version of the app, however, is only a feature accessed in the paid version of the ChatGPT app.

Jasper AI

Jasper AI is a popular alternative to ChatGPT which uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 software. It is an artificial intelligence copywriter that can help you with anything from creative writing to creating a blog post and content creation in line with the topics and information you provide. Its capabilities don’t stop there though, as it can also help with grammar. We’d say it’s one of the best ChatGPT alternatives on the market today for writers, and its ‘starter’ plan for the service provides a 5-day free trial and costs $24 per month. Be sure to read our Jasper AI review for more information.

“Overall, Jasper is one of the best AI software out there today, boasting a super simple UI, speedy results, and over fifty templates to choose from”

PC Guide – Jasper review

Jasper AI has yet to make a downloadable app, which is why it is at the bottom of our list. Although its capability as an AI chatbot matches the prowess of ChatGPT, it is only available on your web browser, making it not the most accessible platform out there.

Which apps use GPT-4?

There are many apps and third-party software integrated with the GPT-4 AI model from OpenAI. On August 22nd, 2023, the AI research and development firm announced updates to both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models, which will affect third-party apps using the API. In OpenAI’s article on GPT-3.5 turbo fine-tuning and API updates, they state that they:

“customize models that perform better for their use cases and run these custom models at scale. Early tests have shown a fine-tuned version of GPT-3.5 Turbo can match, or even outperform, base GPT-4-level capabilities on certain narrow tasks.”

OpenAI – GPT-3.5 turbo fine-tuning and API updates

While currently restricted to a private beta, GPT-4 fine-tuning brings the following benefits to ChatGPT apps using the GPT-4 API:

  • Improved steerability: Fine-tuning allows businesses to make the model follow instructions better, such as making outputs terse or always responding in a given language. For instance, developers can use fine-tuning to ensure that the model always responds in German when prompted to use that language.
  • Reliable output formatting: Fine-tuning improves the model’s ability to consistently format responses—a crucial aspect for applications demanding a specific response format, such as code completion or composing API calls. A developer can use fine-tuning to more reliably convert user prompts into high-quality JSON snippets that can be used with their own systems.
  • Custom tone: Fine-tuning is a great way to hone the qualitative feel of the model output, such as its tone, so it better fits the voice of businesses’ brands. A business with a recognizable brand voice can use fine-tuning for the model to be more consistent with its tone.

Conclusion

The best ChatGPT app (meaning an app that runs on the same tech as OpenAI’s own) will always be ChatGPT. Apps and companies that build their entire business around the API of another company are known as “wrappers”. They’re fast to build because they don’t have to develop or validate any new technology, but they’re also at the total mercy of each new ChatGPT update – something they have no internal control over. With OpenAI’s GPT’s update, announced at OpenAI DevDay in San Francisco, thousands of micro-startups just became redundant, because this one update does what they were attempting to do, only better.

We’ve covered a selection of the best ChatGPT apps out there right now. In terms of which is best overall, it makes sense to opt for the official iOS ChatGPT app from Open AI. However, for search, we recommend opting for Microsoft’s Copilot, while for all-around content Jasper is a great option.

And don’t forget, there are a number of other excellent ChatGPT alternatives on the market today, which are well worth checking out.
