Ever since OpenAI’s chatbot hit the scene in November 2022, it has surged in popularity with seemingly endless use cases in both everyday and working life. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app is at the top of its game, and the top of its industry, with the new GPT-4 Turbo AI model pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence once more. However, there may be some specialist use cases that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hasn’t thought of just yet. So when the foundational model won’t cut it, what are the best ChatGPT apps 2023?
Is there an app for ChatGPT?
Yes, there is an app for ChatGPT.
The bot was built upon OpenAI’s very own LLM (Large Language Model). Interestingly, this language model is also the foundation for many other tools and products that are currently on the market. The AI research firm offers API access to other businesses looking to integrate AI into their products and services. Most businesses don’t have the funding or technical expertise to create their own model, for much the same reason that so many web services are “Powered by Google” rather than wasting resources attempting to build their own search engine in-house.
So, what is it? Well, GPT-4 is OpenAI’s most powerful, natural language processing (NLP) model. It was developed using a massive dataset containing information from the internet, including Wikis, news articles, and research papers. GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer – a cutting-edge tech platform for building a chatbot app.

This makes it well suited for a range of NLP tasks, such as question-answering, text summarization, and language translations. In addition, you can access and use the GPT-3 model through OpenAI’s cloud-based API to create your own app.
What are the best ChatGPT apps?
To be pedantic, ChatGPT is the only ChatGPT app. Available on iOS and Android (as well as via web browser, which doesn’t count as an app version), ChatGPT is the AI chat bot built on top of the GPT-4 LLM. However, other apps can use GPT-4 via the API, giving them similar powers to ChatGPT.
So, the question you want to be asking is – What are the best GPT-4 apps? It might be useful to think of GPT-4 as the brain. Multiple software’s can make use of this neural network. ChatGPT is one such example. The latter is a software product, essentially a user interface for the AI model underneath. It just so happens to be created, owned, and operated by the same company – OpenAI.
Currently, there are a bunch of apps that use this GPT-4 architecture. Arguably some are better than others. Some, for example, will come bloated with ads. Some already have Android apps, but all will answer your queries from any mobile device via browser, in real-time and with nothing to download. But, when it comes to which GPT chat app is best, it really depends on how you plan to use it. Luckily, we have done all the hard work for you and picked the best apps for different use cases below.
Best GPT-4 apps
Best AI copywriter – Jasper AI
Jasper AI is a popular alternative to ChatGPT which uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 software. It is an artificial intelligence copywriter which can help you with anything from creative writing to creating a blog post and content creation in line with the topics and information you provide it. Its capabilities don’t stop there though, as it can also help with grammar too.
We’d say it’s one of the best ChatGPT alternatives on the market today for writers, and its ‘starter’ plan for the service provides a 5-day free trial and costs $24 per month. Be sure to read our Jasper AI review for more information.
Best AI search engine – Bing
OpenAI’s architecture powers Microsoft’s AI model, Bing Chat. The enhanced iteration of Bing features a fresh AI chat assistant that has the capability to address your individual and contextual needs. This assistant combs through the internet on your behalf, sparing you the effort.
But, that’s not all. The new Bing can also do a range of tasks from text summarization, to drafting social media posts, and generating ideas. It is free to use and if you are interested in trying it out, all you have to do is sign up for Bing’s waitlist to be granted access.
ChatGPT august update
The apps above won’t make the best use of all the features added in the August update. This is because some of the following improvements apply to the ChatGPT UI, and not the the underlying GPT-4 model with which other services have API access:
- Prompt examples: A blank page can be intimidating. Therefore, at the beginning of a new chat, you’ll now see examples to help you get started.
- Suggested replies: Go deeper with a click. ChatGPT now suggests relevant ways to continue your conversation.
- GPT-4 by default, finally: When starting a new chat as a Plus user, ChatGPT will remember your previously selected model — no more defaulting back to GPT-3.5.
- Upload multiple files: You can now ask ChatGPT to analyze data and generate insights across multiple files. This is available with the Code Interpreter beta for all Plus users.
- Stay logged in: You’ll no longer be logged out every 2 weeks! Then when you do need to log in, you’ll be greeted with a much more welcoming page.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Work faster with shortcuts, like ⌘ (Ctrl) + Shift + ; to copy last code block. Try ⌘ (Ctrl) + / to see the complete list.
Best multimodal AI – Google Bard
PaLM 2, the latest and most advanced large language model (LLM) developed in-house by the tech giant, is now the driving force behind Google’s AI Chatbot. This iteration surpasses its predecessors in its ability to handle multimedia tasks, a concept referred to as multimodality in the world of AI. Multimodality enables AI to comprehend images and generate text in response, or vice versa. This capacity extends to other types of digital media, including audio and video.
Best ChatGPT apps for iPhone
Official ChatGPT iOS App
You can now find the OpenAI ChatGPT app in the Apple App Store or via OpenAI’s App page. The app brings the functionality of the ChatGPT application into the iOS ecosystem, making it even easier to use.
Official ChatGPT Android App

Best WhatsApp chatbot – AI Buddy
AI Buddy is a GPT-3 powered AI chatbot. Similar to ChatGPT, you can chat with the AI bot, asking it any question your heart desires but discreetly within WhatsApp. This mobile app also has a monthly subscription of $16, giving you up to 500 conversations a month.
Best iPhone chatbot – ChatBot AI Chat
ChatBot is an AI-based chat app that works similarly to ChatGPT. You can converse with the AI assistant for free straight from your iPhone. The bot is able to answer any question and can help you compose essays, songs, poems, and more.
Which apps use GPT-4 AI?
There are many apps and third-party software’s integrated with the GPT-4 AI model from OpenAI.
On August 22nd 2023, the AI research and development firm announced updates to both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models, which will affect third party apps using the API.
OpenAI authors Andrew Peng, Michael Wu, John Allard, Logan Kilpatrick, and Steven Heidel confirm that “Fine-tuning for GPT-3.5 Turbo is now available, with fine-tuning for GPT-4 coming this fall.”
What this update means is that developers can now “customize models that perform better for their use cases and run these custom models at scale. Early tests have shown a fine-tuned version of GPT-3.5 Turbo can match, or even outperform, base GPT-4-level capabilities on certain narrow tasks.”
While currently restricted to a private beta, the GPT-4 fine tuning slated for fall will bring the following benefits to ChatGPT apps using the GPT-4 API:
- Improved steerability: Fine-tuning allows businesses to make the model follow instructions better, such as making outputs terse or always responding in a given language. For instance, developers can use fine-tuning to ensure that the model always responds in German when prompted to use that language.
- Reliable output formatting: Fine-tuning improves the model’s ability to consistently format responses—a crucial aspect for applications demanding a specific response format, such as code completion or composing API calls. A developer can use fine-tuning to more reliably convert user prompts into high-quality JSON snippets that can be used with their own systems.
- Custom tone: Fine-tuning is a great way to hone the qualitative feel of the model output, such as its tone, so it better fits the voice of businesses’ brands. A business with a recognizable brand voice can use fine-tuning for the model to be more consistent with their tone.
Does ChatGPT have an official app?
Yes! OpenAI introduced the iOS ChatGPT app on May 18th. Later, on July 27th, the Android app followed. The app means you can use the functionality of ChatGPT in a fully supported app, and enjoy easier access from your iPhone, without the need to travel to the OpenAI site in your browser.
Which ChatGPT app is best?
We’ve covered a selection of the best ChatGPT apps out there right now. In terms of which is best overall, it makes sense to opt for the official iOS ChatGPT app from Open AI. However, for search we recommend opting for AI-powered Bing, while for all-round content Jasper is a great option.
And don’t forget, there are a number of other excellent ChatGPT alternatives on the market today, which are well worth checking out.
