RTX 5070 Ti vs RTX 4090 comparison – which one comes out on top?

Table of Contents
The RTX 50-series launch is finished, and while the RTX 5070 might've been delayed, the RTX 5070 Ti, which is more favored over the two, has been released. There are plenty of reviews, and most of them praise it for its 4K and 1440p, but it has also been criticized to the same extent by some.
Besides that, the stock issues that we saw with the RTX 5090 and 5080 also impacted the RTX 5070 Ti, as it was sold out within minutes. In addition, the pricing is a huge concern for many as the RTX 5080 only costs $250 more and offers better performance, and grabbing a 5070 Ti at MSRP is tough, to say the least.
So, we're wondering if the RTX 5070 could supposedly match the performance of the RTX 4090, could the RTX 5070 Ti offer even better performance? The RTX 4090 can still hold its own against many GPUs and is a solid GPU for 4K gaming and other resource-intensive workflows.

Performance comparison
Since we've thoroughly tested and reviewed the RTX 4090 in-house, we're aware of its gaming and synthetic performance and can showcase all the numbers it managed across various titles and benchmarking software. However, for the RTX 5070 Ti, we'll leverage the various reviews available online and update it with our findings when we've tested it.
RTX 5070 Ti vs. RTX 4090 4K performance
The RTX 5070 Ti can almost match the performance of the RTX 5080, and we found in our RTX 5080 review that it can trade blows with the RTX 4090. Does this mean that the RTX 5070 Ti's performance would be close to that of the 4090? Let's find out.
The review we're leveraging for the RTX 5070 Ti pairs it with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and we'll take the results for Cyberpunk 2077, Doom, and Counter-Strike 2 as examples.
In Cyberpunk 2077, the RTX 5070 Ti at 4K high quality delivered 67 FPS, while the RTX 4090 at ultra settings managed 74 FPS. At a glance, this is a 10% performance difference, but since we ran this title at ultra settings, it should deliver even better results if we dropped the graphics settings to high. So, the performance difference between these cards is most likely higher than 10%.
Since Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most graphically demanding titles, we'll shift over to Doom, one of the most well-optimized titles that even budget GPUs can run at 4K. The RTX 5070 Ti managed 161 FPS at 4K, while the 4090 maxed out with 243 FPS, which is 40% better performance.
In comparison, Counter-Stike is a very easy title to run and didn't give any of these GPUs any trouble, but when it comes to which GPU performed better, the RTX 4090 delivered 337 FPS while the 5070 Ti trailed behind with 193 FPS (54% performance difference).
So, the RTX 4090 had a stable and superior gaming performance in all the titles, and while the 5070 Ti can increase its performance using DLSS 4 and MFG, the RTX 4090 will get DLSS 4 as well, which should make the competition interesting. The only card left up the 5070 Ti's sleeve would be MFG, which we'll have to see for ourselves how much of an edge it provides over the 4090.
RTX 5070 Ti vs. RTX 4090 1440p performance
The 4K performance of these GPUs was very sided, favoring the RTX 4090, so it wouldn't be surprising to see a similar outcome at 1440p, even though this resolution is more of the 5070 Ti's sweet spot. That being said, we'll compare their results in the same three titles and gauge how much of a difference there is or whether the 5070 Ti closed the gap a bit.
In Cyberpunk 2077, the RTX 5070 Ti managed to churn out 124 FPS, while the RTX 4090 delivered 155 FPS (22% performance difference), meaning that the gap between them in this title lowered by 8%.
As for Doom, the RTX 4090 was able to run this title at a maximum of 421 FPS, while the RTX 5070 Ti managed 239 FPS. For this title, the output difference increased from 40% to 53%, a 13% increment.
In Counter-Strike, the 50-series mid-range GPU delivered 364 FPS, while the 40-series flagship managed 596 frames per second. This is a huge difference of 48%, and while it could be bridged by enabling DLSS 4, the RTX 4090 also has those options available, so it'll be a tough call to make.
While the RTX 5070 Ti managed to lower the performance difference, it wasn't enough to give it victory over the 4090, and that isn't surprising because the 4090 is in a whole other league.
RTX 5070 Ti vs. RTX 4090 synthetic performance
To compare the synthetic performance of these graphics cards, we'll take the output of Time Spy Extreme and Port Royal. Time Spy Extreme is used to gauge how well a GPU can render UHD frames, and Port Royal tests its ability to handle real-time Ray Tracing.
Since the RTX 4090 had better performance at 4K, it should also have better results in Time Spy Extreme. The RTX 5070 Ti managed 13,550 points, meaning it can almost compete with the RX 7900 XTX, which scored 14,892. However, it isn't a match for the 4090 as it had an output of 18,940 points, meaning it is 33% better at rendering 4K frames.
In Port Royal, the RTX 5070 Ti managed 19,254 points, which is impressive and more than what the 7900 XTX could manage, but the RTX 4090 delivered 25,132 points, and it isn't surprising since it has more Ray Tracing cores than the 5070 Ti even if they might a generation older.
Design differences
A big difference between the RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs is that the latter managed to shrink down the size, stopping the trend of cards increasing in size with each generation. So, in this section, we'll explore that and other differences, such as memory bus width and PCIe connection, and how they impact the performance of these graphics cards.
Size
The RTX 5070 Ti doesn't have a Founder's Edition variant, and its size varies by manufacturer. However, the FE version of the RTX 4090 measures 304 x 137mm (LxW), making it a 3-slot and pretty hefty card.
The variant we reviewed was ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC, which measured 357.6 x 149.3 x 70.1mm, meaning it was even bigger than the FE model and, in comparison, a triple fan version of the 5070 Ti like the ASUS PRIME RTX 5070 Ti measures 304 x 126 x 50 mm, much smaller than the FE and third-party 4090 variants.
So, the RTX 5070 Ti is smaller in size and boasts a better cooling design as Nvidia shrunk down the PCB, allowing the fans to blow through the card. In addition, AIB designs should improve the performance with large heatsinks and bigger and faster fans.
Pricing and availability
The RTX 5070 Ti has a $749 MSRP, which is fine for a mid-range card, but that also means the competition to grab one is also tough. Another aspect in the equation that complicates that situation is that it is very closely priced to the RTX 5080, which costs only $250 more.
The RTX 5070 Ti went live and was cleared out almost instantly. That being said, there are options like the ASUS TUF RTX 5070 Ti available on Best Buy, but it costs $979.99, at which point you might as well wait and try to grab an RTX 5080.
On the other hand, the chances of grabbing an RTX 4090 are much better, but there aren't many options available on Amazon and Best Buy. Newegg has plenty of 4090s available, but you'll be better off purchasing a high-end prebuilt gaming PC at eye-watering prices.
We spotted the ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4090 and the GIGABYTE RTX 4090 WINDFORCE V2 on Newegg for $4,299 and $3,844.99, respectively. We don't recommend that you opt for the RTX 4090 with such hefty price tags, and it might be better to wait for the 50-series to restock or check out AMD equivalents like the RX 7900 XTX.
Verdict
Between the RTX 4090 and the RTX 5070 Ti, the former is the better GPU as it outperformed the latter in gaming and synthetic testing. The only way the 5070 Ti can match the 4090 is by leveraging DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Generation, but that will only help it in gaming, and the 4090 will get DLSS 4 later on and has better synthetic performance.
When it comes to pricing, the 5070 Ti is the better option, but that is only if you can get it at its MSRP because if you're going above $749.99, you'll be better off paying slightly more and grabbing the RTX 5080, which can more closely compete with the RTX 4090. The prices for the RTX 4090 are absurd, as not even the third-party RTX 5090 variants cost that much.
