With the new year now here, that means it’s already time to talk about CES 2025 – one of the biggest events on the tech industry calendar. This year has already shaped up to be a huge one, particularly thanks to the launch of a new generation of graphics cards. Intel already launched the B580 and B570 in December, while CES this week should see the launch of both Nvidia’s RTX 50 series and AMD’s RX 9000 series (after skipping the 8000 series in terms of desktop GPUs) – the flagship is now revealed to be called the RX 9070 XT.
FSR 4 announced at CES 2025
Sticking with AMD, another thing to think about is the next version of FSR, its upscaling and frame generation technology. This has now been confirmed by AMD as part of its CES 2025 announcements, but there’s one thing that may get in your way if you want to use it: compatibility.
We’re used to FSR being widely available across a wide range of GPUs, but the latest edition – FSR 4 – is locked behind the upcoming generation, specifically the RX 9070 series cards. Right now, that includes the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. According to official AMD slide below, “AMD FSR 4 upgrade feature only available on AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics for supported games with AMD FSR 3.1 already integrated”. The slide also suggests that Black Ops 6 will support FSR 4 once available.
FSR 4 had already been discussed a little bit by AMD (just not by name). In prior interviews, it was said that AI will play a ‘big part’ in the tech, and will aim to improve the battery life of your Steam Deck. However, now with the announcement official, we can see a lack of support for older GPUs, at least for the time being.
