Introduced in 2011 with iOS 5, the smart voice-activated assistant has been a staple part of Apple’s mobile user experience for more than a decade. This September, Siri will be getting a substantial AI-powered upgrade, which tech journalist Mark Gurman predicts will “improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences.”
Apple has yet to release its own AI chatbot, in the style of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Google Bard. 2024 looks set to change this, with the world’s (now second) most valuable company recently announcing the Apple Ferret LLM. This large language model is the same kind of technology that powers ChatGPT – and that can only mean one thing. If Apple doesn’t release a standalone AI chatbot before September, it’s sure to be the flagship USP of the keynote event.
Multimodality is also one of the hottest terms in AI right now, and for good reason. Chatbots have largely perfected text generation already. Across various styles, document formats, and tones of voice, AI-generated text is usable and time-saving in many cases. Audio and images are harder modalities for which to achieve the same level of fidelity; fighting against our evolutionary instinct for exactly what a human face looks like isn’t easy! However, these modalities too are in a usable state. Video… not so much (although Google Lumiere is very impressive). iOS 18 is set to feature multimodal AI features far beyond the speech-to-text with which we’re all familiar. However, the names of these tools and features are, predictably, being kept under wraps.
