Apple iOS 18 is coming this September 2024. Moreso than any previous release of the mobile operating system, we’re expecting some serious artificial intelligence firepower. Here are the iOS 18 AI tools to look out for come September.

Apple iOS 18 AI tools to expect in the next update

The AI tools to expect in Apple iOS 18 include a much smarter Siri.

Introduced in 2011 with iOS 5, the smart voice-activated assistant has been a staple part of Apple’s mobile user experience for more than a decade. This September, Siri will be getting a substantial AI-powered upgrade, which tech journalist Mark Gurman predicts will “improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences.”

Apple has yet to release its own AI chatbot, in the style of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Google Bard. 2024 looks set to change this, with the world’s (now second) most valuable company recently announcing the Apple Ferret LLM. This large language model is the same kind of technology that powers ChatGPT – and that can only mean one thing. If Apple doesn’t release a standalone AI chatbot before September, it’s sure to be the flagship USP of the keynote event.

Multimodality is also one of the hottest terms in AI right now, and for good reason. Chatbots have largely perfected text generation already. Across various styles, document formats, and tones of voice, AI-generated text is usable and time-saving in many cases. Audio and images are harder modalities for which to achieve the same level of fidelity; fighting against our evolutionary instinct for exactly what a human face looks like isn’t easy! However, these modalities too are in a usable state. Video… not so much (although Google Lumiere is very impressive). iOS 18 is set to feature multimodal AI features far beyond the speech-to-text with which we’re all familiar. However, the names of these tools and features are, predictably, being kept under wraps.

We can expect more details at WWDC, the Worldwide Developers Conference, in June.

Next-generation Siri could be ‘ChatGPT-style’ in iOS 18

A next-gen version of Siri is reportedly coming to iOS 18. The next iteration of Apple’s smart assistant will operate similarly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT – and be far more powerful than when ChatGPT was released in November 2022.

The potential of a multimodal AI assistant built into your phone’s operating system cannot be understated. We all know how useful the most popular AI chatbots are today. Now imagine being able to talk to that chatbot regardless of what you’re doing on-screen at the time – or even while it’s in your pocket! An artificial intelligence that can execute commands in any app via voice commands will completely change how millions of people use their phones.

The smartphone form factor revolutionized personal computing due to its convenience and portability. What could be more convenient than a smartphone you don’t need to pick up to use? This is certainly the philosophy of AI tech wearables like the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1. Time will tell if this strategy pays off.

Will Siri get an AI upgrade?

Absolutely, Apple Siri will be getting an AI upgrade. Specifically tapped for the September release of iOS, tech journalist Mark Gurman predicts the new Siri, as well as the Messages app, will be better equipped to “field questions and auto-complete sentences.”
