The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is here, and while its performance isn’t that different from the 9800X3D in gaming, it has improved its productivity, outperforming the Ryzen 9 9950X and also offers big improvements over the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, which thoroughly impressed us in our testing. So, the main takeaway with this processor is that you don’t need to choose an “X” or “X3D” variant, as it delivers everything in one package.

Naturally, pairing one of the best CPUs on the market with one of the best GPUs available is the obvious choice here – and that would be Nvidia’s latest RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. That being said, many of us have encountered stock issues with both the 5090 and 5080, making it difficult to get everything we need to complete our 9950X3D build.

If you’re keen on grabbing something right now, we’d recommend the 4090 and RX 7900 XTX instead – both of which make for solid alternatives to the 50 series and are generally easier to buy. On the other hand, the RX 9070 XT is also an excellent graphics card as it offers much better value and doesn’t compromise performance.

It shouldn't be surprising to see the RTX 5090 at the top of this list. For the ultimate gaming and working experience, pairing the most powerful gaming and creative CPU with the most powerful GPU makes sense. 

The previous Nvidia flagship GPUs came with 24GB VRAM, which was more than enough for high-resolution gaming and various resource-intensive workflows. However, the RTX 5090 took it further by increasing it to 32GB GDDR7. 

So, it is a double increment as the GDDR7 memory type has a higher total bandwidth as it has a max data rate of 32GB/s per pin. According to Micron, paired with a 384-bit memory interface width, this memory type results in a 1.5 TB/s memory bandwidth.   

That being said, the RTX 5090 has a 512-bit memory bus width with a 1792 GB/sec memory bandwidth, meaning regardless of how much you push this GPU, you shouldn't experience any lag or performance degradation. 

This level of hardware, combined with what the 9950X3D brings to the table, means you should be able to push 4K and even 8K easily. What makes it even better is the addition of DLSS 4 and multi-frame generation, which can help churn out even more frames. 

While we haven't had the opportunity to test this card yet, plenty of performance reviews are available online, showcasing its ability to churn out higher frames than its predecessor and competition at UHD. For example, in one test, it managed 129 FPS in Ray Traced F1 24 while the RTX 4090 got 86, which is a difference of 43 FPS (40% better performance in this specific title). 

On the productive side, this pairing should also ensure you can speed through resource-intensive tasks like video editing, training models, 3D rendering, and more. 

Overall, there is no doubt that this graphics card’s gaming and synthetic ability and, coupled with the 9950X3D, should ensure that you can make quick work of any task efficiently. The only issue is that the RTX 5090 is in high demand right now, and the stock issues mean very tough competition and scalpers selling it off at eye-watering prices.

When it comes to high-end GPUs from AMD, there is only one option, and that is the RX 7900 XTX. This card rivals the RTX 4090 in 4K gaming but at half the cost. In our RX 7900 XTX review, it delivered excellent gaming performance, but compared to Nvidia alternatives, its synthetic output couldn't match up. 

In our gaming tests, we got 70 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K and 137 FPS at 1440p. We're highlighting this specific performance benchmark because Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most graphically demanding titles to run. 

To put this output into perspective, the RTX 4090 managed 74 FPS, which is only 4 FPS more. So, if you're looking to build a high-end gaming PC with the 9950X3D, the 7900 XTX is one of the best GPUs to use. However, it isn't the best option for productivity, comparatively, but it should also get the job done. A benefit of opting for this graphics card over the RTX 5080 is that it has 24GB GDDR6 VRAM, which means it should perform better in tasks requiring high VRAM usage, like high texture rendering. 

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a stellar graphics card for 4K gaming with enough under the hood to achieve high frame rates natively. 

PC Guide

Another great aspect of this GPU is that it has a 384-bit memory interface width. What this means is that this card can process 384 bits of data per clock cycle, which, combined with the PCIe 4 x16, should result in excellent performance across the board as a PCIe 4 x16 connection has more than enough bandwidth that not even 4K gaming should saturate it. 

The only downside with this GPU is that it won't get FSR 4, which is exclusive to the upcoming Radeon 9000 GPUs. So, you'll only get FSR 4 for enhanced gaming performance, but this is the last “high-end” GPU from AMD, and its hardware shows that.    

Overall, this is an excellent GPU that should set your system for years to come, tackling any workflow you put in front of it. It also has great 4K gaming, but since you can get some of its variants for less than $1,000 on sale or slightly above that if not on sale, like the Sapphire Nitro+ AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Vapor-X GPU, which is, at the time of writing, available for $1,134.99 on Amazon.

While anyone going for a Ryzen 9 9950X3D will most probably have their eyes set on a high-end graphics card, the reason we included the RX 9070 XT is that if you’re aiming for productivity but want a GPU that delivers excellent performance and value, the RX 9070 XT is one of the best options out there.

We’ve tested and reviewed the ASUS Prime RX 9070 XT OC and were pleased and surprised by its output as it could easily outperform the RTX 5070 OC and managed to go toe-to-toe with the RTX 5080 in some games and took home some victories. This should give you an idea of how much AMD has improved its RDNA architecture with its 4th iteration.

With this GPU, you’re getting 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, a base clock speed of 1,660 MHz, a boost clock speed of 2,970 MHz, and a 256-bit memory interface width. What this means is that it has enough firepower to handle the most resource-intensive tasks and applications with ease, and you can even say that it can punch above its weight class.

However, what gives it its edge are the 4nm process nodes, meaning that it can fit more CU on the die and have a transistor count of 53.9 billion. For comparison, the RX 7900 XT has a transistor count of 57.7 billion but is spread over a 529mm² die, whereas the RX 9070 XT has a 357mm² die size. This is how much of a difference the size of the process node can make, and more transistors mean better efficiency and performance.

Overall, the RX 9070 XT is a great graphics card for the price. Fighting against cards higher up in tiers and so providing an excellent choice even for 4K gaming and with ray tracing capabilities.

PC Guide

To gauge its gaming performance, we paired it with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is tied with the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, and the difference between them is negligible. We ran a handful of games but will take the output of Cyberpunk 2077, CS2, F1 24, and Doom Eternal.

The reason for choosing these titles is that they are a good mix of demanding, easy, and well-optimized and showcase how this card will handle titles with varying graphical fidelity. In Cyberpunk 2077, we got 61, 129, and 193 FPS at 4K, 1440p, and 1080p, respectively.

In F1 24, which is a racing simulator, the RX 9070 XT delivered 75 FPS at 4K, 131 FPS at 1440p, and 177 FPS at 1080p. All of these figures are what the 9070 XT could manage natively, so it is pretty impressive. Doom Eternal is one of the most well-optimized titles, and it wasn’t surprising to see this card churn out high FPS as it managed 228, 387, and 482 FPS in the same three resolutions.

In Counter-Strike 2, which is one of the most played games in the world, we got 110 FPS at UHD, 231 FPS at QHD, and 339 FPS at FHD. So, as you can see, these graphics cards have no issues delivering good frames at 4K and at lower resolutions where the 9950X3D would truly shine.

What makes this even better is that it was easily available on launch, and its stock should be replenished soon. It also costs less than the alternatives from Nvidia but can easily match and even outperform them.

The second best GPU to pair with the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the RTX 5080. While some glaring issues are popping up, like cables melting, it isn't an issue in the Founder's Edition that we've tested and reviewed. However, stock issues are also plaguing this GPU right now, and you might have to wait a couple of months to get your hands on an RTX 5080. 

That being said, it isn't all bad, as the wait is worth it because this card has excellent productivity and gaming performance, which left the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4080 Super in the dust. This GPU is based on the Blackwell architecture and has 10,752 CUDA cores. It has a 378mm² die with 45,600 million transistors, which is 300 million less than the RTX 4080's 45,900 million count. 

However, while it may seem like its performance would take a hit, the GDDR7 memory type and new architecture ensured that didn't happen. In our RTX 5080 testing, we got 72 FPS at 4K in Cyberpunk and 181 FPS in Shadow on the Tomb Raider with Ray Tracing and DLSS at 4K. 

The Nvidia RTX 5080 FE is an impressive graphics card from the get-go. Its eco-friendly packaging and minimal size are surprising factors in unboxing, but the performance doesn't falter with that design. Instead, it quickly pushes 4K framerates at the highest settings and improves on the previous generation without breaking a sweat.

PC Guide

For comparison, the RTX 4080 managed 57 and 161 FPS in the respective titles. So, based on this gaming performance, the 9950X3D and 5080 should make for a powerful pairing in gaming. On the other hand, it also has exceptional synthetic performance. 

We ran the suit of 3DMark, which included Fire Strike Ultra and Time Spy Extreme, which gauge a GPU ability to render 4K frames, and Port Royal, which tests real-time Ray Tracing performance. The RTX 5080 got 21,568, 16, 069, and 22,113 points in these respective tests, and this output is substantially better than the RTX 4080, as it managed 16,135, 12,930, and 16,894 points. 

So, whether you're playing games or running resource-intensive applications, a gaming PC with these two components should make quick work of any task you put in front of it. The only catch is that you'll have to wait for the stock to be available, and even then, the competition is likely going to be tough. 

How to choose the best GPU for Ryzen 9 9950X3D

There are plenty of factors you need to consider before choosing a GPU, so we've listed a couple of them to help you make an informed decision.

Usage

The main factor to consider while looking for a graphics card to pair with the 9950X3D is what you're going to be using the system for. For example, if you're building a workstation, then an RTX 5080 or 5090 would be more suited due to their beefed-up specifications, and besides work, they can also provide excellent gaming output. 

However, if you're looking for the best gaming performance, you can opt for an RX 7900 XTX, RTX 5080, or even an RTX 4080 Super, as all these GPUs can churn out good framerates at 4K. But the point is that if you're playing games at 4K, the titles primarily depend on the GPU’s ability to render 4K frames, and the load is taken off the CPU. 

So, the 9950X3D wouldn't be under too much pressure to churn out instruction. Still, for the sake of conversation, even if you're gaming at 1080p, you shouldn't experience a CPU bottleneck as the 9950X3D takes gaming performance to the next level. If the 5090 couldn't pose an issue to the 9800X3D, it is safe to say that the 9950X3D should handle any workload without breaking a sweat.
