It looks like we should be expecting an AI-centered smartphone from tech brand Nothing fairly soon. The CEO Carl Pei recently posted a video expressing his view on the future of smartphones. In this video, he details how he believes Smartphones are the AI gadgets of the future and that AI could change the way in which we use our phones.

With the expectation of Nothing’s Phone 3 to arrive in July, maybe we’ll be seeing a fully AI-centered smartphone sooner than expected, slowly moving away from the ‘app-based’ experience we’re all used to. As Pei says though, it’s definitely going to be a gradual process – as no-one today is going a buy a phone with no apps.

What will the Phone 3 be like?

In Pei’s video, he discusses the use of AI in the future of smartphones and claims that AI will change the way we use our phones. Pei states, that despite the development of smartphones increasing their aesthetics, speed, and ease, the fundamental experience hasn’t changed for a long time and we still rely on a multitude of apps, many of which don’t communicate with each other.

This insinuates that Pei believes Nothing’s next Phone release, the Phone 3, can take a step in a direction that provides a more personalized experience. For example, in reference to the home screen, they “wanted to move away from it just being a launcher for different apps and services”, instead being “a hub of contextual, relevant information”.

There have been rumors circulating about the Phone 3 for some time, however, Pei has now mentioned its existence, stating it will be the brand’s first true AI phone. If the company follows previous years launch schedule we should expect to see the Phone 3 available around July.

The video showcases a couple of demos that the Nothing team has made. One incorporates a personalized voice assistant into the operating system, and the other shows a personalized, dynamic home screen that seems to be a mix of a news feed and an app launcher. The demo demonstrates how it can complete advanced tasks such as pulling relevant content from the web, automatically grabbing QR codes for tickets, and showing reminders and weather.

AI has been at the forefront of Nothing’s mind for a while, with the brand incorporating ChatGPT into their recent Ear Headphones. The Verge reports that on a podcast with Pei, he described his ideas for the future of smartphones, detailing how Nothing is trying to give users the option to take the power back from apps that have gotten too powerful, in his eyes. That opinion was largely centered around reskinning the interface and providing notification controls with the Phone 2. However, with Nothing’s next launch, seems to mean making AI responsible for app functions.
