To check this motherboard's performance, we paired it with the Ryzen 9 9950X and the RTX 4070 Ti. We ran Cyberpunk 2077 and got 234 FPS with an average package power of 139.467W, while the maximum CPU and motherboard temperature were recorded at 80.3°C and 37°C, respectively.  

In the Cinebench R23 multi-core test, this combination managed 39,932 points for productivity workflows. The average power draw was 168.1819W, while the 9950X’s maximum TDP is 170W. The CPU and board temperatures were 72.9°C and 36°C, respectively. So, it didn't hold back the processor, and given its PCIe 5 slot, it should easily accommodate the RTX 5090 as well, meaning you shouldn't suffer from a CPU or GPU bottleneck. 

Overall, this is an excellent motherboard with great features, connectivity options, and WiFi 7 support. For those who want to give the Arrow Lake processors a shot and pair them with the RTX 5090, we recommend the ROG Maximus Z890 Hero. This is a great mainboard with high-end features, and in our ROG Maximus Z890 Hero review, we gave it a 4.5/5 rating due to its excellent performance.

To begin with, this is an ATX motherboard measuring 12 inches x 9.6 inches (30.5 cm x 24.4 cm). This is the standard size for an ATX motherboard, but if you've got a small PC case, it is better to measure whether it'll fit before making a purchase. 

Besides its great performance, we chose this LGA 1851 board for the RTX 5090 because it comes with PCIe Gen 5 connectivity for storage and GPU. So, once again, you can easily get the best out of the 5090 and give your system an efficiency boost with super-fast Gen 5 SSDs. 

This works because PCIe 5 has more bandwidth. While a PCIe 4 card will work fine as PCIe generations are reverse compatible, only a PCIe 5 GPU can fully utilize the connection and deliver next-gen performance. 

The ROG Maximus Z890 Hero ticks all the right boxes for both experienced and first-time builders. It's packed with features that make for easy installation, offers incredible cooling performance, and plenty of ports and connectivity. 

PC Guide

A downside of this motherboard is that it is only compatible with DDR5 RAM, whereas LGA 1700 motherboards are compatible with DDR4 RAM as well. So, you'll have to invest in new RAM, a well that can increase the price further, but the performance upgrade makes it worth it.

Once again, we can't ignore the VRM, as that regulates the energy for the CPU. This mainboard has a 22+1+2+2 power delivery design. This means that the power gets filtered through four stages and multiple phases, meaning the CPU can run at its full potential, and we saw that during our tests. 

We paired it with the Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4070 Ti. During the Furmark 2 tests, the CPU’s average power draw was 236.7W, with the motherboard remaining at a cool 38°C. The CPU reached a max temperature of 84°C, so Intel and ASUS did great jobs keeping their respective components cool. We can see that the 285K could get as much power as it needed as its maximum TDP is 250W. 

So, any Arrow Lake processor should be able to unleash its full potential, meaning no CPU bottlenecks when playing at lower resolutions, even though it’s not likely that you'll be using the RTX 5090 to play games at 1080p. However, since the 285K has excellent multi-threaded performance, this combination with the motherboard should ensure that you can run resource-intensive applications without a hitch.

The RTX 5090 comes with a hefty price tag, and if you’re looking for a motherboard that will serve as a solid foundation for your 5090 gaming PC, we recommend you check out the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi. We’ve reviewed this motherboard in-house, and it impressed us with its performance and ability to deliver power to the CPU.

This is an AM5 motherboard that costs less than $250 and can support Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors. Also, now that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D have been released, you can use this motherboard for either of those combined with the RTX 5090 for the ultimate creative and gaming PC.

That being said, this motherboard has impressive features, as it can accommodate 256GB of DDR5 RAM with a maximum memory speed of 8,400 MT/s. While 256GB for any gaming or professional workload is overkill, having a significant overhead for upgrades allows you to increase your system’s performance and efficiency by simply installing more RAM.

As for the PCIe version for storage devices and the GPU, this mainboard features PCIe 5.0, meaning the RTX 5090 should be able to unleash its full potential, and this board should also be able to handle flagship GPUs in the future as even a PCIe 4.0 x16 offers enough bandwidth that the 5090 and 4090 can’t fully saturate it.

The Tomahawk B850 is a great mid-tier motherboard option which grants you access to the incredible speeds of te AM5 platform, without the price tag of the X870. With top-level Gen 5 performance, the latest connectivity, and EZ solutions for installations, this is a motherboard that ticks practically every box I can think of.

PC Guide

Regarding connectivity options, we get WiFi 7, which is the latest and fastest WiFi standard, but if you prefer a wired connection, there is a 5G LAN port, which should be more than enough to accommodate a high-speed internet plan. For connecting peripherals and other devices like portable SSDs, there are two USB 10Gbps Type-A, 1 USB 5Gbps Type-A, and four USB 2.0.

To see how it performs, we paired this mainboard with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the RTX 4070 Ti and ran a couple of benchmarking software and games. In Cyberpunk 2077, we got 242 FPS with a maximum temperature of 29°C and a power draw of 67.2W. On the other hand, Counter-Strike 2 ran with 730 FPS with a 32°C maximum temperature, which is higher than what it was during Cyberpunk 2077, but the power draw was lower at 54.4W.

For its synthetic performance, we’ll take the example of CPU-Z. In our 7800X3D review, this processor has a CPU-Z multi-core score of 7,085 points, but with this motherboard and setup, it managed 7210.9 points. So this means that this board was able to deliver more power to the 7800X3D than the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero, which we used in its review. This is a high-end board of the previous generation, while the B850 is a mid-range board, which speaks a lot about how much better the hardware is.

Overall, if you’re looking for a cost-effective motherboard for the RTX 5090 to pair with Ryzen CPUs, this is one of the best options available on the market.

In our ASUS PRIME X870-P WiFi review, it showcased excellent performance, power delivery, and thermal design. We'll dive into the details later, but first, we'll look at what enables this motherboard to produce such performance. 

For starters, this motherboard features an X870 chipset, which is high-end and also comes with PCIe 5 connectivity for storage devices and the GPU. So, you can mount any device and unlock its full potential from the get-go without experiencing performance degradation due to a lack of channels. 

Like the other boards on this list, this board has a maximum memory capacity of 192GB DDR5 RAM, so you're not missing out on anything in that department. In addition, the maximum memory speed is comparatively slow, at 8,000 MT/s, but it is still fast enough that you shouldn't run into performance issues and that it should keep your system's efficiency at a high level. 

So, all these factors combined mean that whether you're gaming or working with the RTX 5090, you shouldn't run into any issues, and on the off chance that you feel your system is lagging, you can increase the RAM and give it a boost. 

The Prime X870-P is a nice cutback option from the ASUS lineup. Complimenting the Ryzen 9000 series nicely, even if it's a month or so after its release, it does give a good platform for any AM5 processor.

PC Guide

A great aspect of this board is that it has WiFi 7 connectivity and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. So, if you've got a high-speed internet plan, you can enjoy its full bandwidth via wired or wireless connection and game, stream, or work from anywhere in your house or office.

Regarding its performance, we tested it using the RTX 4070 Ti and Ryzen 9 9950X and weren't disappointed in the least. In Cyberpunk 2077, we got 220 FPS with a maximum board temperature of 34°C and an average package power of 128.309W. 

For comparison, the ASUS ROG Strix X870 got 234 FPS with an average package power and motherboard temperature of 139.467W and 37°C, respectively. So, in gaming, there is only a difference of 14 FPS, and the overall temperature is also great. The only big difference is that the Strix X870 was able to deliver more power, hence the better performance, but it also cost more. 

So, given its price point and its features, this is a beast of a motherboard that can handle the Ryzen 9000 series flagship and be paired with the RTX 5090 without compatibility issues. This way, you're saving some cash while getting excellent performance in gaming and productive workflows.

This means that it should also fit easily inside the best cases for the RTX 5090. However, when it comes to the size of the RTX 5090, third-party variants can vary, and if you’re interested in exploring some options for the best RTX 5090 GPUs, we’ve got you covered.

That being said, this motherboard has PCIe 5.0 connectivity for the graphics card and storage devices. What this means is it should pair perfectly with the RTX 5090 and you can install the best Gen 5 SSDs for fast boot and load times. While PCIe generations are backward compatible, meaning the 5090 will also work fine with a PCIe 4.0 slot, its performance will be limited due to fewer channels available for data transfer.

It also has a robust power delivery system of 20 + 1. This means that the power is filtered through 20 filters before reaching the CPU, which ensures a clean and stable power supply to the processor, which is important for overclocking the CPU. It also has a teamed power stage design, which means that the CPU can get power from multiple stages, resulting in better performance.

As for its performance, we paired it with the RTX 4070 Ti Super and i5-14600K and ran a handful of benchmarking software. The maximum power from the wall was recorded at 311W when we ran Blender Junkyard, with the package power peaking at 181.059W during the Cinebench multi-core test.

Despite this, the maximum VRM and motherboard temperatures were 50°C and 37°C, respectively. So, the onboard thermal guards and cooling solutions did an excellent job keeping it cool. This motherboard didn’t hold back the 14600K from reaching its full potential, and since it is made for pure power and overclocking, it should be an excellent fit for the 14900K or 13900K paired with the RTX 5090 for gaming and professional workflows.

The only downside to this board is that it is heavy and based on the previous platform, LGa 1700, which Intel no longer supports. So, whether it is worth investing so much in a platform with a dead upgrade path, you’ll have to decide, but we can’t deny that this motherboard is one of the best out there for previous-generation Intel CPUs.

How to choose the best motherboard for RTX 5090

A motherboard can help unleash or suppress your system's performance, and choosing one for a GPU as powerful as the RTX 5090 isn't straightforward. There are many factors that you need to consider, and we've mentioned a couple of them to help you make an informed decision.

Budget

The RTX 5090 isn't a cheap card, but you'd need a motherboard with a PCIe 5 slot for the GPU to get the best performance. Now, most of the new mainboards have a PCIe 5 slot, and obviously, the high-end options cost more, but there are also mid-range and budget options.

So, we recommend that you filter the available options based on your budget. This should give you a list of boards that meet your requirements but won't burn a hold in your pocket. After that, simply choose the one that offers the best performance and value. 

Compatibility

Even if you're looking for a motherboard for the RTX 5090, we can't ignore the processor, and depending on which CPU you've got or are planning on buying, you'll need to get a compatible board. 

If you've got an AMD CPU and are on the AM5 platform, the latest motherboard chipset is the X870, which is high-end, meaning it costs more but also has the best performance. However, if you've got a Raptor Lake (12th, 13th, 14th gen) or Arrow Lake (15th gen) Intel CPU, a Z790 (LGA 1700) or Z890, B860, or H810 motherboard would suit you best, respectively, depending on your budget. 

PCIe version

While the RTX 5090 will also work with a PCIe 4 slot, its performance will be held back due to the lesser bandwidth. It'll only perform at its best when mounted on a PCIe Gen 5 slot. So, ensure the motherboard you opt for has a PCIe 5.0 slot for the graphics card and storage.
