I am having difficulty in getting a MKE 563-b 2 speed cd-rom drive to function on a 486 board. It is connected via the proprietry connection on the SB16 sound card. Sound works fine. Using 562 drivers, as thats all I could locate. Error message reads on bootup 'CD-rom interface not found'

What Operating System are you using? And post your config.sys file here. Two things I'm looking for. The drivers for the 562-CR should work, but only with DOS and Win 3.11. The drivers will not work in Win 95.

Also if you have 2 hard drives, you might have to add a switch to the line in config.sys that loads the driver to force it to take another drive letter.

Have to see the config.sys file to know what to do from here.

Unless they're typos, I see a couple of problems in your files which I'll highlight in the quoted section below. Other than that, Pete can help more than I can on this one... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Autoexec.bat File =

SET BLASTER = A220 I5 H5 P330 T6
SET MIDI = SYNTH:1 MAP:E
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\GEOWORKS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TEMP = C:\DOS
C:\CD-ROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000space/M:15space/Y
WIN

Config.sys File =

DEVICE=C\CD-ROM\CDMKE.SYS /D:MSCD000space/P:220

Hi Pete

Thanx for the help and I apologise for not getting back sooner.

Operating system is DOS 6.22 and Win 3.11
Autoexec.bat file =

SET BLASTER = A220 I5 H5 P330 T6
SET MIDI = SYNTH:1 MAP:E
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\GEOWORKS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TEMP = C:\DOS
C:\CD-ROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000/M:15/Y
WIN

Config.sys File =

DEVICE=C\CD-ROM\CDMKE.SYS /D:MSC000/P:220

Only one hard drive is installed.

thanx again.

Here's the config.sys on my Win3.11 machine with the same CD ROM drive, but different sound card:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 4000
buffers=30,0
FILES=30
DOS=HIGH,UMB
LASTDRIVE=E
FCBS=4,0
STACKS=9,256
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,12048 =C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DOS=HIGH
DEVICEHIGH /L:2,4560 =C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
DEVICE=C:\SOUND16A\DRIVERS\CDMKE.SYS /P:340 /D:MSCD000

I'm not sure if anything is wrong with your config.sys file, except that if that's the entire file you posted it's missing command lines that refer to himem.sys, etc. Leave out the RAM 4000 parameter, that tells Windows to use expanded memory. And check for what mom wonderd, is that a typo?

What I was wondering about was whether you had a second hard drive, in which case you would have to add a switch to tell it to give the CD ROM another drive letter.

You can also leave out the lines pointing to IFSHLP and SETVER.

Thanx for the help guys, but alas..........it still is no go.........
Below are the files as they stand now:
Note: Using Dos6.22 and Win 3.11

Autoexec.bat File

SET BLASTER = A220 I5 H5 P330 T6
SET MIDI = SYNTH:1 MAP:E
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\GEOWORKS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TEMP = C:\DOS
C:\CD-ROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000 /M:15 /Y
WIN

Config.sys File

FILES=40
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
STACKS=9,256
BUFFER = 30
INSTALL = C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /f:4096
DEVICE=C\CD-ROM\CDMKE.SYS /D:MSCD000 /P:220

I have re-checked all cabling and it looks ok. Pete, there is only one hard drive connected to the MB. Please help as I am getting close to inflicting some pc rage !......lol......

Thanx again

Guess I have to admit to being baffled. I don't see anything wrong with the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, maybe the drive is dead? It's definitely ancient, maybe it decided to give it up...

You might try rearranging this line:

DEVICE=C\CD-ROM\CDMKE.SYS /D:MSCD000 /P:220

to look like this:

DEVICE=C\CD-ROM\CDMKE.SYS /P:220 /D:MSCD000

That's about the only diference I see between mine and yours, the placement of the /P: parameter. The value should be correct for your setup.
