You will no doubt see an increase but a 6970 will be bottlenecked by the x4 slot. If it were x8 you would be fine, but x4 is going to choke it.
I realise some games run crossfire better than others, but I was wondering what kind of increase I would get with x2 HD 6790's running in crossfire? Oh, and on a 16x @16x and 16x @4x PCIe slot? so 16x and 4x with x2 6790's. Please no suggestions about other cards and such either.
Ive got an
FX 4100 CPU @ 3.6Ghz
500Gb Seagate barracuda hardrive
2x4Gb of corsair Vengeance RAM
Asrock AM3+ 970 Extreme3 board
Antec 900Watt HCG Power supply.
-thanks

Ahh, my mistake. Guess my eyes wanted to see 6970.No issues then.
I have been seeing some issues with the latest drivers in crossfire though. I am using 11.12 drivers and CAP's (catalyst application profile). Still a bit buggy, but way better than 12.3. The biggest issue seems to be the 12.3 CAP, but even just the 12.3 driver and 11.12 CAP was still not very good.

i run in crossfire and have no issues with that driver (12.3) as it seems to play all games with great scaling.............heard there was some issue with it but not here................
but.......x4 will lose some of the productivity of having Cfx 6790's

I didn't notice any issues with 12.3 running a single card.
I didn't crunch the numbers but x4 shouldn't hurt a 6790 too much at all I wouldn't think.

should be OK with that gpu card as it will not saturate x4............just sometimes with x16 in the first slot and x4 in the second slots, wanky things have been known to happened.........better to have a x8x8 than x16x4........but both should work
