Will be installing Windows xp on new machine , what is the best way for updating windows . I have sp1 & sp2 so do I go to windows update & install the other updates first then do you need sp1 or is sp2 sufficient.

sp2 will cover all the updates up to the point that sp2 was released. There may updates on the update site after sp2. As a matter of fact there was one major one yesterday.

Best way is to install XP and then install your SP2 update. No need to do SP1 as this is 2built" into SP2. After that, when oyu have installed ALL oyur security programs go to MS updates and do latest updates.
Be aware though that SP2 turns on Windows Firewwall by default. If you are installing your own firewall (this is the recommended route to go as MS's only stops incoming traffic0 remember to disable MS's.
Better yet have you thought about making a Slipstreamed CD. (XP with SP2 built in)?

If you fancy going the Slipstreamed route here is a link to a nice simple, easy, very easy, to use program for slipstreaming. It takes only a few clicks and as long as the speed of your burner/computer.

I may be mistaken but I was under the impression that the SP2 firewall was an improvement over the pre-existing one by monitoring both the incoming AND outgoing traffic.Originally Posted by ErnieK

The sp2 firewall only watches stuff coming in not what is going out. I have read stuff from Ms saying that if you have another software firewall, use it. this firewall is for the millions who have no idea what a firwall is and really don't want to know but just have it there and working

Mark is correct. MS reccomend using third party fiewall if you have one to give protection in and out.
