New Hard Drive

I am installing a new hard drive on a system and need to get windows 98 on it. It is ready for the OS to be installed. My trouble is that the CDROM will not work so that I can use the W98 CD to install from. I was thinking if I could get my hands on W95 floppies I could do it that way. Once installed I could upgrade to W98. Is there another way?

If your motherboard was made in the last few years, it probably has an option to boot from CD. The Win98 CD is bootable.

Most CD-ROM makers also have driver install sets that will do pretty much everything for you... check online...

I have had the same problem when re-installing Windows 98. For the first couple of tries I would have to select the "command prompt w/ CD support" and run the D:\setup.exe within dos. The problem was: I had 2 hard drives, 2 cdrom drives, a modem, and a sound card all connected to my mother board at the time I tried to clean install Windows 98. To accually get the Windows install program to find my cd-rom drive I had to disconnect the extra CD-rom drive and extra hard drive. Another problem I had was the fact that the EZ-bios software installed on my maxtor (2nd HD) was trying to control my primary Seagate drive. This caused Windows to run in DOS compatability mode.

The Win98 start up disk will make your life lots simpler. It installs a temporary RAM drive with CD ROM drivers, and you can carry on from there with the install process.

Boot to the startup disk and choose Start Computer with CD ROM support.

You can get your hands on a win98 start up disk by making one on another win98 computer, go to:
Start\Settings\Control Panel double click Add/Remove Programs and click the Startup Disk Tab. Have a floppy ready... Or you can download a bootdisk from Boot Disk read their instructions, the file you want is a self extractor, not the bootdisk itself.
