Post pc to pc or pc to laptop

Friends,
I have a PC and a laptop at home. PC is latest model but
laptop is very old one (IBM 560 machine).
It hasn't got a CD-ROM or Floppy drive (both external drives
which presently dont work).
I wanted to know if it is possible to connect laptop with PC using
serial port (a serial cable with male connector at both ends).
Please let me know if this is feasible?
Also, in case you know about a branded cable which does this,
please let me know so that I can go through product data sheet.

Yes, it is commonly called a "Lap-link" or null-modem cable.

If the laptop has a USB port then you could also use something like this.

A couple of things to keep in mind about using it this way, first it will be slow...very slow, and second you can't really use it to install, but you can copyu the install files across the link and then install after they are copied.

Hi,
I did get the serial port connector (cable with 2 9-pin female head)
I am using hyperteminal to connect laptop and PC.
When I try transferring files I always get connection timed out from
both the ends.

Here is the way I try transferring the files.
*connect to com port on laptop and select transfer characters
*connect to com port on PC and select same transfer characters
*say send on laptop
*say receive on PC

I keep getting "connection timed out"

How do I proceed from here. Should I look at the pin layout and start
looking for real voltage levels to check if the Laptop or PC are in fact trying to push something out or the ports are bad as such.

Is there anything else that I can do...?
