Apple M3 chip release window speculation
There’s rising curiosity around the Apple M3 chip release window, with speculation indicating the launch will be sometime as early as late 2023 or early 2024. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported third-party apps have already been tested with the processor.
According to a recent rumor by leaker Revegnus, it is suggested that there won’t be any M3 Macs or M3 iPads released this year. This is reportedly due to supply constraints caused by “yield issues with TSMC,” a Taiwanese chipmaker. However, this does leave open the possibility for these devices to launch in 2024. Considering the recent announcement of a new 15-inch MacBook Air, it is uncertain whether this device will be included in the lineup for 2023. Instead, it might be more plausible to expect the release of a high-end variant of the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini or other similar laptops.
Apple Series Chips Release History
In the first two iterations of Apple chips, the M1 and M2, the Pro and Max chips were released simultaneously, and we anticipate a similar approach for the M3 chip.
Historically, there has been a notable time gap between the initial release and subsequent higher-end models. However, the transition from the M1 Ultra to the M2 chip didn’t require a significant amount of time, only a few months. Based on this pattern, we anticipate the possible release date of the Apple M3 chip by the end of 2023. However, it is more likely to occur in early 2024.
Apple M3 chip spec rumours
According to rumors, the M3 chip is speculated to utilize TSMC’s advanced 3nm manufacturing process. This could explain the slight delay in the M3’s release, considering the earlier mentioned supply challenges. Currently, the MacBook Air and iPad Pro utilize TSMC’s less powerful 5nm process.
Initial rumors focus on the specifications of the Apple M3 Pro, which is expected to offer a performance boost compared to the base version. For reference, the rumoured M3 Pro specs are provided below. There are some seriously impressive core counts and an extreme level of power from the processor expected – a proper upgrade.
- Processor: 12-core CPU (6 high performance cores, 6 power efficient cores)
- Graphics: 18 GPU cores
- Memory: 36GB RAM
