Apple has just launched their latest iPad models. Both the iPad Pro and iPad Air have been refreshed with new 2024 models, a (relatively) long wait for some since 2023 didn’t see any new tablets released from them. Either way, there are a bunch of new things to consider if you’re deciding on which one to go for. The new iPad Pro is now Apple’s thinnest product to date, making it even lighter than the iPad Air.
We’ve taken a closer look at the dimensions and weight, noticing that the new iPad Pro is both thinner and lighter than the new iPad Air, which sort of takes away some of the appeal of the Air in our opinion.
iPad Pro M4 is now Apple’s thinnest-ever product
The time has finally come for the iPod Nano to pass on its title as the thinnest Apple product. It held onto that achievement ever since the final model launched in 2012. It is sort of unexpected to see that the flagship iPad Pro is the one taking its crown, especially over the Air.
However, thanks to the new thin OLED panel fitted on the Pro, this allows for Apple to cut down on the depth of the device. Apple demonstrated this in a TikTok video, comparing the new iPad Pro and iPod Nano at 5.1mm and 5.4mm thick respectively.
It’s even lighter than the new iPad Air
When comparing the new iPad Pro 13″ and the iPad Air 13″, we can see that the impressively-thin 5.1mm depth gives it the edge over the Air’s 6.1mm. Additionally, the 11″ iPad Pro model is just 5.3mm thin for a similar experience. This, plus the new lightweight OLED display on the Pro allows it to be much lighter at just 579 grams compared to the Air at 617 grams. Neither of them come close to the regular 10th gen iPad which measures in at 477 grams, though this is only for a 10.9″ display.
So, confusingly, the latest Pro is the new lightweight option which sort of takes away one of the main selling points of the Air, though the latter is of course still the more cost-effective choice. Both new 2024 devices are available in 13-inch and 11-inch sizes, but the Pro is lighter in both instances.
