If you’re looking to invest in a security upgrade, you might be wondering whether to buy a smart lock.

It’s up to you, but if you’re a big fan of home electronics tech, it’s an appliance you might want to consider. Smart locks are nifty pieces of technology which connect to the internet. This means you can lock or unlock your door from your phone or laptop. You can also link the lock to other smart home appliances.

Smart locks are great for people who want to bring their home security into the future. They have features which enable you to let in friends whilst you’re away – you can change the PIN or biometric unlocking (think fingerprints) depending on who you need to give access too. Plus they remove the need for fumbling in your bag for your keys when you get home. Many come with cameras which mean you can see who’s outside your door, and even communicate with them.

Is a smart lock right for me?

If you want to make getting through the door a whole lot quicker and easier, a smart lock might be right for you. The Nest x Yale – Smart Lock is widely considered best in class.

They’re also good for the forgetful among us. Do you often forget to lock the door in the morning? You’ll get a notification sent straight to your phone if you forget to lock up, then it’s as simple as tapping ‘lock’ to ensure your home is fully secured.

However, smart locks are not for everyone. If you’re not very good at keeping up with internet security measures such as creating and utilising hard-to-guess passwords, you might want to give them a miss. Instances of hacking are extremely rare, but it’s not impossible.

PC Guide Expert Opinion

If you’re wondering whether to buy a smart lock, have a careful think first to make sure it’s right for you. If you’re a smart home tech enthusiast or have organisation issues (like losing keys or forgetting to lock the door), a smart lock might be just what you need.

However, if you think you might struggle with the technology or have some qualms about the security they provide, it might be best to give smart locks a miss.
