Nvidia has just unveiled its new RTX 4070 graphics card, highlighting AI-powered performance enhancements, 1440p max gaming potentials, and a starting price of $599. Team Green has stated that the release date is set for April 13th, and the company is currently running sweepstakes for those interested in winning a brand-new RTX 4070.
While the AD104 SKU, with higher specs, was rebranded as the RTX 4070 Ti, the lower-spec AD104 will now be officially known as the RTX 4070. There have been numerous revisions to the rumored specs for the RTX 4070, but the latest information highlights the GPU is less powerful than initially anticipated.
Specs | RTX 4070 |
---|---|
CUDA Cores | 5888 |
Memory | 12GB GDDR6X |
TDP | 200W |
Anticipated to be a potent graphics card, the RTX 4070’s performance is on par with that of an RTX 3080. The RTX 4070 will run on the AD104 chip, which is one step below the top-of-the-line AD102 wafer. Despite this, the card shows impressive gaming performance at 1440p per Nvidia’s own internal metrics.

RTX 4070 gaming performance
According to Nvidia’s own purported testing, the RTX 4070 shows some stellar gaming metrics. Even at max settings, several games, like Cyberpunk 2077, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and much more sported over 100 FPS potentials, making the 4070 a beast for 1440p gamers.
That is, however, if the metrics are to be believed. With most reviewers, including Linus Tech Tips, Gamers Nexus, and JayzTwoCents, the 4070 is so much of a major upgrade as it is a quality addition to mid-range options. Gaming performances, at least by Linus’ testing, showed little improvements over the 3080, especially in 1440p workloads.
Will the 4070 be better than the 3090?
The RTX 4070 will come with the power and efficiency of the new generation of Nvidia. This GPU will be, then, a slower version of the RTX 4070 Ti. According to the performance we’ve seen from the 4070 Ti and the expected specs of the RTX 4070, the ladder should be as efficient and powerful as the RTX 3090.
Kopite’s tweet suggests that the RTX 4070 is capable of achieving a Time Spy Extreme score of 10,000, which is a significant improvement over its predecessor, the RTX 3070, which only managed around 7,000. This impressive 35% increase in performance puts the RTX 4070 in the same league as the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 Ti. However, it is likely to fall somewhere in the middle of the pack if we were to make an educated guess.
How powerful will RTX 4070 be?
The RTX 4070 will reportedly offer 5888 CUDA cores, and 12GB of GDDR6X. This compares to the 9728 CUDA cores and 16GB of the RTX 4080, the 7680 CUDA cores, and the 12GB of the RTX 4070 Ti.
It’s no surprise that the specs are lower, but in terms of power, it could be a solid card for 4K on some titles while 1440p is its true place to shine. This will be impacted by its price, of course, as the graphics card market shuffles to fit in more newcomers.
How much is the RTX 4070 gonna cost?
It’s still entirely left in the dark, but thus far reports suggest that the RTX 4070 should cost as high as $599, which isn’t so bad in the grand scheme of things. It’s about half that of the RTX 4090 and could sport some exciting features if the various rumors are to be believed.
