As one of the most used internet services of 2023, many users are asking “Does ChatGPT have an app?”. A convenient and self-contained solution would not go amiss for the Sam Altman-founded OpenAI chatbot.
Does ChatGPT have an app?
Yes, you can download the iOS App for your iPhone right now. Currently, if you want to use ChatGPT on Android you’ll be doing so through a web browser (e.g. Google Chrome or Safari). Try reading “What is chatgpt – and what is it used for?” or “How to use ChatGPT on mobile” for more information on this topic. In some situations, this is more convenient than having to download a service before using it. However, implementing GPT-4 into a mobile app shortcuts the prompt process and would expand the possibility for new features in the future.

The convenience of a single icon to tap from your home screen is ultimately a better user experience, and worth the download. An official ChatGPT App could come with faster response times to prompts, more comprehensive syncs of user chats, and typically a less cluttered UI without the mobile browser UI on top.
Where can you pre-register for the ChatGPT Android App?
While the browser-based AI chatbot affords synonymous accessibility across all devices (great!) they really aren’t where we’re going to make the most of artificial intelligence (boo!). ChatGPT Plus and, more recently, ChatGPT Enterprise, are evidence of OpenAI pushing to bring new functionality to the platform. Paying subscribers already have access to the latest version of ChatGPT, with gpt-4’s capabilities far outperforming the GPT-3 available to free users. Thankfully, all users can make use of Whisper, the “open-source speech-recognition system, enabling voice input” developed by OpenAI themselves.
There are multiple reasons why originally browser-based services choose to create their own smartphone app. It pays to have control over your connection to your users. Shortcuts are named so for a reason. Websites are bound by the restrictions of the web browsers they exist within, whereas an official app would be limited only by the operating system. Speaking of operating systems…
Does ChatGPT have an Android app?
Yes! You can download the official ChatGPT Android app here. Be careful to only download the app published by OpenAI.
On the 25th July 2023, I noticed the following message on the Google Play Store.
Clicking “Install” at this time would have pre-registered your download of the OpenAI’s new mobile app. This means that the app will download to your phone automatically now that it’s available on the Google Play Store.
It has landed in the United States and UK first, before rolling out to additional countries similarly to their iOS roll-out.
Does ChatGPT have an iOS app?
Yes, you can get ChatGPT on iPhone. Originally published on the Apple App store on Thursday 18th May 2023, iPhone users have enjoyed access for months, while Android users have been limited to the web version.
If you’re still looking for other large language models (LLM), and alternatives to the ChatGPT web app, try Google Bard, or Bing Chat on any desktop or mobile browser.
